complaint: Packaging
|

| Not really a serious complaint, I am not a flamer but does anyone find
getting in to accessories a challenge - that sealed plastic packaging is a
killer. I bought a replacement headset and it took me about 10 minutes to
get it out undamaged.

| Yes, but the Microsoft packaging is only part of the industry way of
handling displays and portability. They're all a pain. If you do a Google
search on "package opener" you'll find some enterprising people have created
simple openers for those rigid plastic containers. Personally, I use a
large pair of scissors. 8-)

| Yeah, scissors or an X-acto knife work great. Considering how expensive
most accessories are these days, it's mostly anti-theft. Hard for a 12-year
old punk to steal stuff from Wal-Mart in a huge, bullet-proof package.

| I'm sure retailers hate these packages. When something is returned,
it's hard to resell it in a package that's been hacked at with a
machete to get it opened.

| I strongly believe this type of packaging should be found to violate the
Americans with Disabilities Act. The really curved, slippery packaging is a
real bear to open with scissors. I don't know how many times I've started
with scissors and then attempts to finish pulling it apart as to not damage
the product. The end result was usually a nice cut on my fingers.

| Why don't you file a complaint with the government then? That would be the
way to approach it, of course.

One store near me will charge you a 10% "restocking fee" to cover the cost
of the packaging you had to destroy opening the thing in the first place.
Then they simply put the thing into a plastic bag, staple it, slap a
reduced price tag on it, and put the thing back on the shelf.

| No, I don't work for Microsoft. I am disabled and fill my time by
voluntarily trying to support fellow users in the public newsgroups, via
forums and on xbox.com's forums, plus my web site. People helped me learn
about computers many, many years ago when I first started beta testing in
the DOS days, and I am trying to repay their courtesies. See
http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/mvpexecsum about the MVP program.

I can add to this - Chris H has helped me in the past - especially when I
had a major issue with my tablet pc. He gives up his time and help (with no
gain to himself).... one of the newsgroup good guys.

| 8-) Thanks. It is a common assumption that any of us who have "Microsoft
MVP" in our signature line work for them. We don't, but probably are the
harshest critics when we find something we don't believe is correct either
in programs or how we, as users, are approached and supported.

| I just put peanut butter on it and give it to my dog Skipo. Gets it open in
about 10 minutes.

That's smart, but what if you want to actually use the product inside?
After all, that nifty new thumb drive isn't going to do you a whole lotta
good if Skipo swallows it - and somehow I don't think you'll want it back
after he's "done" with it either. ;)
