I have the Component cables for my Xbox, and I know there's an optical
connection I'm about ready to use. Is it a 'standard' connection into the
MS HD pack like maybe these "mini-adapter" connections I see that come with
some optical cables? Or is it a 'proprietary' connection that means only an
official MS optical cable will work?

Standard tos-link optical. I got one with the surround system I use. If you
look on the xbox end of the component cables you'll see where it plugs in.

Nope, it's just a standard connector. Don't spend a lot of money on the
cable. It's optical. It either works...or doesn't. Buy the cheapest one
you can find that's still long enough.

I still need help!!! Sorry, but I bought the following optical cable:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...ctId=2404349&cp

Notice the picture -- see the clear-plastic around the metal connector? It
is flat on the bottom and psuedo-round on top which lets it fit into my
receiver. However, both ends are that shape and the Xbox High-Def cable
pack does not have the same shape receptacle. The connector on the Xbox end
looks like it takes just the 'metal' part of the optical cable (the gold
colored part in the picture). So far I haven't found a way to easily remove
the molded plastic part. What am I missing? Should I have gotten a
different "standard optical cable"?

The Port on the 360 Video Cable is Standard. It has a door type cover over
it, you should be able to just push it right in.

I'm talking the original Xbox. Turns out I need an adaptor (idiots). Found
one on ebay. The adaptor plugs into the HighDef pack at the Xbox end, then
an optical cable plugs into the adaptor.

Hopefully someday soon I'll have my Xbox on 5.1.

That's odd, I bought MS's high-def pack for my Xbox, and the optical cable
plugs right into it, no adaptor is required for the optical input.

I had a Intec one. It was a Black box on one end and about a Foot and a
have of cable and the Xbox Plug on the other end. The Cool thing was that
it had Plugs for just about everything. It had RED/White/Yellow for
Compost Video and Stereo Plugs on it, it had the Red/Green/Blue for a
Component HD connection(which I used) It also had a S-Video connection if I
wanted to use that, plus the Digital Optical Port. I could Pretty much use
ANY brand cable I wanted to plug into the Box. There was also a switch on
it to switch between Component and Composite, kind of like on the 360 Combo
cable.

It allowed me to jack into pretty much ANY TV using the Best connection I
could. All I needed to do was grab any S-Video, or Component, or Composite
cable I had laying around and jack in. The only thing I couldn't do I had
another adapter for just in case. The RF Adapter for any TV I couldn't plug
in one of the other ways. In the end, I never used that one, but it was
cheap.
