Someone gave me an Xbox that has a hard drive that make a clicking
sound and the front LED flashes orange-green.

1. How do I recover the data from the HDD so that I can install a new
one?
2. What does the flashing mean?

You sure it's orange and not red? Orange and green indicates a problem
with the video output, and you can usually fix that by reseating the video
cord. Red and green indicates a generic hardware fault, a diagnosis that's
corroborated by the clicking hard drive.

Assuming that you can't get it to boot after messing with the video cable,
then you have only a couple of options open to you if it's not modded. I
would check out the XboxHDM tool, which lets you build an unlocked hard
drive from scratch. Keep in mind that the Xbox Live service checks the
state of the hard drive, so it's probably a good idea for you to generate
the hard drive locking code from the Xbox and lock your drive once you've
built it. Any method of building a new XBox hard drive will involve some
working knowledge of Linux. Here's a link if you're interested:

-KKC, counting the months until another RPG gets released for the Xbox
360. How come they won't port the Shin Megami Tensei stuff?

You're right, it was orange. Over the weekend I plugged in the video
cable and power it up and it actually worked. I was even able to play
some music that was left on the drive. Then I made the mistake of
cycling power. After that, the hard drive would just click and I got
an error message. I'm checking out the link to the tool you suggested.

Thanks.
