PS3 in good shape.

THE SONY PS3 is steadily making progress after previous reports of multiple
woes and setbacks for Sony.
Never far from controversy, Mark Rein, Epic Games Vice President, has been
promoting the capabilities of recently arrived dev-kits. In a recent video
interview for Eurogamer, Rein emerged as a considerable steward for the new
console from Sony.
"I think Sony's in a good spot with the Playstation 3," Rein said, adding "I
know we're getting some great results with it back at our house, so I would
expect other developers will be as well."
Mark also spoke on how the Sony devkits have made a timely arrival.
"Developers were just getting final PS3 hardware [around E3], which is a
long time before ship, developers did not have finished Xbox 360 hardware
last year at E3. So Sony's actually maybe in a better place vis-a-vis
Microsoft in relation to launch."
This voice of good news for Sony follows confirmation from SCEA (Sony
America) PR manager Ryan Bowling that over 10,000 PS3 devkits have been
shipped to aid developers in their fight against the esoteric architecture
of the Cell-based console.
It seems that Sony aren't having quite as many problems with coercing the
games development community as previously suggested. However, Cell yields
are still low, and Sony must be hoping this improves soon, along with the
image of the console perceived by the gaming public - which is still at a
low ebb. 10,000 devkits and a chummy games VP do not necessarily equal
millions of sales of a $600 console. µ

| Funny how companies compare products that haven't been released to ones that
have been.
Microsoft is expected to have 10 million console lead on Sony's PS3. Now
they are talking about a price cut?
Sony's PS3 better be good or they are going to get eaten live. I am
seriously considering Nintendo's WII as my 2nd console of choice.

Sony better be in good shape since they are playing major catch-up to
Microsoft. I am hearing all these reports about how much better the
PS3 launch seems to be progressing compared to the 360 launch, but look
at the facts: Microsoft was a pioneer, entering the virgin next-gen
console market for the first time. Of course there were some
shortages, Microsoft had little idea what the demand was going to be
for high priced next-gen consoles. Nobody did. Microsoft was the
first to enter the next-gen console market and therefore the first
company to make mistakes in it. Sony now has the luxury of learning
from Microsoft's mistakes and gains insight into the next-gen console
market that Microsoft never had during the 360 launch.

Background before I get flamed as a Sony fanboy...
Never owned a PS until the last price drop of the PS2...don't have a XBox
360 but do have the original, and owned a few generations of the Nintendo
(dating back to the original).
But how can you say MS is the pioneer and Sony has the luxury of learning
from MS's mistakes? MS didn't begin the concept of the console. MS has
been the last to get into the console market so they've had the luxury of
learning. Yes, Sony and Nintendo are late to get out the newest gen
consoles, but one would have hoped that both companies were well versed by
now (although it looks like...at least for the moment...that Sony with the
selling price may have taken a step back).
In any case...waiting until the PS3 and Wii launch before I throw my money
out there. Right now (until Sony actually shows something) the 360 is the
most impressive, but the Wii looks more fun.

I hear what you're saying. Sure, MS was a follower of Sony and
Nintendo when MS initially entered the console market. But today, MS
is an experienced player also, with 5 years under its belt. But the
fact is, this next-gen market is unlike any previous market any of the
companies have had to face recently. It's almost like selling to a new
market alltogether. It's really hard to guage demand in this market
because you are trying to sell expensive, next-gen consoles to a mass
market of consumers who don't even own the type of TV the consoles are
optimized for. In this respect, MS was entering a very unknown
territory.

| Arcane,
Sony better be concerned about the XBOX Live platform. Microsoft is allowing
Vista, Zune, Mobile Devices, etc.. to play online. This is huge!
As far as the console goes, yes Microsoft is losing money but they are after
"subscriptions!"

| It wouldn't suprise me if Sony asks Microsoft if they could use the XBOX
Live platform for their gaming service. =0}
Isn't that why Microsoft is building it? or wait, maybe not. =0}
