Hooking up an old xbox to a tv?
|
|

| Hi all,
I have an xbox (not 360) that has two cords coming
out of the back. One is the power cord and the other
has 3 rca jacks connected to it: red, yellow and white.
What do the red, yellow and white connectors do
and how do I hook them into a tv so I can at least
play some games?
thanks,
charles.....

Red and white are the audio connections, and yellow for the video. Your TV
should have these (the female ends hopefully LOL) unless your TV was built
before 1992, and even then, some TVs had those connections then. Just match
the male jack colors with the females connector colors that are on your TV
(if they have them).

So if the back of the tv just has yellow and white, I get mono and video?
later....

Yes, and you will have to set the audio settings in your Xbox to mono or
something "non-stereo". To be honest, you can get really good 27" TVs for
about $200 that would be great forthe Xbox, and then you could use S-Video;
that is unless you are not under monetary constraints.

Would that mean I would have to buy another cable to plug in between
the xbox and the tv that would replace the one I have? Does S-Video
carry both sound and video? Is S-Video the "best" connection I can
hook up for the xbox?

You will need to purchase a separate cable kit for s-video. You can find
them in the same ailse as the other XBox accessories. Don't buy the
Monster Cable one - it's overpriced. The one from Microsoft or Pelican
will do fine, and is about $10.
S-Video replaces the yellow RCA cable. You still have the red and white
cables for stereo sound.
There is also component video, which is slightly better than S-video, and
can support progressive scan (480p) for those games that use it. You'll
need a TV that has a component inputs and can support progressive scan
though. This is the best possible picture supported by the Xbox.
Component video consists of 3 separate RCA cables - blue, green and red
(not to be confused with the red audio cable) You'll still have the
additional red and white cables for stereo sound.
Xbox also supports optical audio for surround sound. You'll need a
surround sound decoder, as well as an optical audio cable. Again, don't
bother with anything from Monster, just get the cheapest cable you can
find.
