Help please - Cannot enter text from MCX remote numbers

| Hi all,
For 2 years I've had 2 MCX devices (an Xbox 360 and a Linksys MCX), both
working fine with their respective remote controls for multi-tap text entry.
But some time recently *both* MCX's have started to only allow digit entry,
and I can no longer enter text.
E.g. try to type 'C' and I get '222'.
Could this be the result of a recent Microsoft Update? Any ideas how to get
things back to normal? I'm not sure when it started so don't want to try a
System Restore if I can avoid it. It is likely a while ago as I don't use
text entry that often.
I presume the above indicates the issue is on the host MCE machine.
