| I haven't seen this happen. Hmm...The smell of burning rubber is not a good
sign. Did you happen to buy your system prior to October 23, 2003?
Microsoft has recalled some XBox power cords which may possibly cause
"burning" inside of the console:

Here's a Gamepot.com thread on the power cord recall:

I would certainly check to see if you're model's manufacturing date is
affected considering it's three years old.

| The Same thing happened to me. All I did was took it to the fireplace with a
good fire going threw it in and threw gas on it. My vision was blured for a
couple of days. It works fine now. I suggest you do the same and if it
dosen't work for you, get a new one. That's all I can say.

Are you using one of the replacement power cables with the surge
protector in? If not then its most likely the power supply. Before they
issued the replacements I had a similar problem, the cable actually
melted at the point it meets the power supply. It worked fine afterwards
but I didn't trust it, I assumed it was the power supply and bought a
new one off eBay and replace it myself since it was out of warranty.
Turns out it was a fault with those earlier power supplies hence the
replacements and the redesign in the later revisions.
You might want to see if you can get hold of one of the cables from
customer services if you haven't already. I'm not entirely sure if the
PSU is safe to use afterwards though, might want to ask about that too.
