Author TV picture off center with XBox 360

I have my XBox 360 connected to a standard (non-hdtv) 27" TV via the
component inputs. The problem is my tv screen is shifted about 1/2
inch to the left so things on the left side of the screen are cut off.

Is this the fault of the 360, the TV, or the games themselves? Is
there an adjustment for this somewhere on the 360 dashboard? There
should be, I think I remember the Nintendo Gamecube had this
adjustment. Would buying a new TV fix the problem or not?

Thanks for any input!

Hi ShadowGod

I know someone will probably respond to this also and give you some tips.

Here are a few of mine:

You should be able to run the component cable on your TV and get 480i (SDTV)
but you'll want to make sure you have chosen 4:3 and not 16:9 I'm not sure
if widescreen enable/disable is part of the XBOX 360 dashboard or not.

Also it might be hard for you to find another TV that takes component that
isn't HDTV capable but you could probably test the regular composite cable
on your TV also to determine if it's your connection, XBOX360, or TV that's
giving you the problems.

I'd also try powering on the XBOX 360 and TV at different times.
I.E. boot up the XBOX 360 first then turn on the TV.. Incase the TV sets
itself up early on the signal but then the signal changes later.

Worst case you should still have the option to move the screen over to the
right inside some games that support that.
Also most games should not have text visible on the outer edge for that
exact reason.

Did you perform the XBOX 360 update already on XBOX live?

Does your TV support 4:3 or 16:9 widescreen?

Hope this helps you somehow.

Hi ShadowGod,

There are Display settings in the 360 Dashboard under the purple "System"
tab. Select "Console Settings" and then "Display." There are two options
labeled "HDTV" settings and "Screen" format. You may want to try setting
your "Screen" format from "Normal" to "Widescreen" or vice-versa to see if
the picture centers itself. Have you tried playing different games to see
if the tv picture stays off-center for all of them? Check with you
television's User Guide to see if there might be ways to change the screen
formatting and/or tracking. (Remember having to adjust tracking on old VCR
tapes?) Some of the newer tvs have over half a dozen different screen sizes
depending on what you are using it for (theatre movies, sports, etc.) I
would certainly not buy a new television set. Maybe you have everything
hooked up (cables, settings, etc.) for an HDTV instead of a regular TV?

Here are a few Knowledge Based articles to reference:
