My friend has the Xbox 360 premium package (with the chrome looking
disc tray) and every time he touches the "eject button" he gets an
electric shock similar to the static shock you would get by touching a
doorknob after rubbing your feet along the carpet, but much stronger.
Has anybody else had this problem? Should he return his Xbox 360?

I have not seen this problem. But, I experience shocks when I get in and
our of my car from the carpeted seats and then touch the door frame!

I certainly wouldn't return the XBox 360. Is the unit actually sitting on
the carpet? If it is, try moving it to a surface that is non-conducting.
Static tends to build up on carpeted areas, especially in the winter time
and when the humidity is low. Your friend may try touching a non-conducting
metal, such as a wood door, before touching the disc tray. Wearing some
kind of non-static shoes can help as well. Maybe even press the "eject"
button with a non-conductive object.

I have my XBox sitting on a small wooden wine box and have not noticed any
shocks.

If the original poster is getting shocks without crossing the room
(meaning he can touch the console twice while standing still and get a
shock both times), then I would definitely return it. I've never heard
of this behavior, and the console has a serious problem, and is probably
a fire hazard.

Yes, I agree with you. There very well could be a fire hazard. However, we
do not know the logistics or set-up of the equipment. (One of the no-nos is
to have the XBox laying directly on the carpet.) I think if the OP calls
XBox Tech Support they may offer suggestions as to how and where to set up
the box to prevent static discharge. They may very well recommend returning
the unit! I still think doing a few simple tests first, as outlined in my
previous post, may help decide if the box is the problem or the
surroundings.

I'm curious...Has the OP's friend had any other problems with shock on any
other electrical equipment in the household or just with the XBox only? If
the OP's friend is nervous about potential fire, by all means return the
XBox! Better to be safe than sorry.

To get electric shocks stronger than a static shock, it doesn't matter if
was giving himself carpet burn trying to build up static, it aint right, I
would return it if it was happening to me....
But then again.... the unit that you would get back could be a whole
different story.......

You are aware there is such a thing as a static shock powerful enogh to kill
you...just not in this scenario.

Howevere, I've seen at a bread plant, the statck of plastic baskets going
around the plant on a chain converyor.
That hurt worse than 480 3/phase

We installed negative ionizers everywhere and that really helped, but it
where people were in contact.
Touch one way out on the floor and it was a big mistake.

Wouldn't have thought you could get a shock off the eject button as it's
plastic rather than metal.

It's a microsoft bug. The plastic was manufactured so badly that it conducts
like copper!

The real reason for the 360 manufacturing problems and low availability.

Or is the button made of this:

He gets the shock even if he touches something metal first to discharge
any static (the doorknob or a metal hinge on his entertainment center.

It's sitting on top of his entertainment center. He often gets shocked
even after touching something else first to discharge any static shock.

Leaving the 360 on a carpeted surface isn't going to cause it to build up
static electricity. And even if it did, the thing is plugged into the
wall which is going to provide a MUCH better ground than someone touching
the button.

Seriously, if you're getting shocked just touching the unit, I'd return
it. Period.

Call Microsoft and demand a replacement. There's a serious fault in the
unit if it's shocking you.
Jennifer Burgin [MSN MVP]

Yes, it's definitely best to call Microsoft after what you've further
explained. Hopefully a replacement unit will not experience the same
problem.
