Got the digital/optical audio cable and hooked it up to my receiver just as
the manual (and customer support) says it should be hooked up. The optic
cable runs from the Xbox cord to the "audio optical in" slot in my receiver.
Sound comes out of my LCD HDTV (as the red, white, red, blue, and green
cables are connected to my TV).....but not my surround sound system. I'm
starting to fear that maybe my receiver can't decode the 5.1 audio signal or
something.

My Sony receiver has the following decoders: DTS decoder, Dolby Digital,
DTS-ES decoder, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital Surround EX.

Is my receiver compatible????? If not, is there anything I can do (cheaply)
to assist it in decoding the signal? Is there some sort of setting on my
receiver that I'm overlooking?

Your receiver probably has several audio inputs. Make sure you select the
right input to match the audio connection. Also, be sure to turn on optical
audio in your XBOX dashboard.

Good luck,
Gary

The first time I set up my XBox for DD51, I ran into this issue. It
turned out my receiver enables downmix (basically taking the 5 channel
signal and turning it into 3) when connecting via optical in by default
(kinda odd, but whatever). Anyways, I'd suggest looking for downmix in
your receivers manual settings and make sure it's disabled. Also be
sure the XBox is set to output in DD51 (this is set from the Settings
menu in the dashboard -- what you see when the machine is booted without
a disc).
