We just got a 360 platinum...Hard drive and all, Why can't we play the
old X-box games?..
Maybe I am missing something...I thought that the 360 would play the older
games...Am I wrong?
Thanks for reading this.........................Butch

Hi Butch,

You will need to download "software emulators" for your old XBox games.
Please see the "Backward Compatibility" information on XBox.com:

No, the hard drive already has the emulator for all supported games.
If it doesn't work, complain to MS.

No, that's not correct. When you first go online with one of the
"compatible" games, you will have a small download which is installed on the
hard drive.

The hard drive ships with an early version of the emulator that will allow
you to play Halo and Halo2 (offline only). In order to play any other games
you need to download the update. You can do that by signing into LIVE and
inserting an original xbox game that is on the official compatibility list
or you can also download the update from xbox.com and burn it to a disc.

They ship it with them installed, otherwise my son-in-law wouldn't have been
able to play all those games he does, because he doesn't have a net
connection.

I would suggest you read an interview with Todd Holmdahl, VP of the Xbox
Product Group: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/bac...atibilityqa.htm
in which the details are explained:
=====
"What I’m really proud to tell you and your readers is that it’s easy to get
the emulation software, and it’s free. We’ll give gamers a choice—you can
get the latest software updates from Xbox Live, burn a CD from xbox.com or
sign up on Xbox.com for a CD that can be delivered to your home at a nominal
shipping and handling fee. Once you get the CD, put it in your Xbox 360 and
you’re ready to go."
=====
Emulation software for each game is NOT on the hard drive which ships with
an Xbox 360 Premium system.

you have to be connected to xbox live and download the update for the
regular xbox games to work.

1. log in as your xbox live account
2. put the old xbox game you want to play
3. it will ask you to download the update

No, they aren't. That's the whole point. Why would Microsoft's Xbox team
load up a hard drive with "possible" solutions. Besides, not everyone has a
hard drive. Some people have opted to use memory cards for storage of their
games, and they couldn't possibly hold "everything" as you're indicating.

Here's the situation:

360's backward compatibility REQUIRES the HDD.

The HDD ships with the emulator, and works with a handful of games, most
notably, Halo and Halo2. Since releasing the 360, Microsoft has released a
couple of updates via Live that add more games to the compatibility list.
Supposedly, they will continue releasing updates in this manner, improving
the number of games that will work the 360. (yes, I know you can also download
the updates as an ISO, burn them to CD, and use them to upgrade your 360.)

That's why you see posts from people talking about "the new update" -
that's the emulator they're talking about.

And no, you can't just put it on the memory card because the original XBox
games *ASSUME* you have a HDD, and the memory cards just aren't big enough
(or fast enough) to emulate that. That's the main reason you need the HDD.

Again thanks to all. I went to X-box.com and downloaded the small 3 meg
file...unzipped it and sent to burner... Put it in the 360 and updated
it...It worked like a charm. The file name is "Default.xex.
Now we can play some of the older games!.....we have dial up..So this is
great for people that don't have
High speed.......You just need to have X-box live account...Which was
simple!...And again, Thanks to all.....Butch

Fwiw, three ways to get the file:

1) Connect to XBOX Live and download directly.
2) Goto XBOX website, download to pc, burn to disc, install manually on your
system.
3) Order a disc with the emulator on it for free (you pay S&H, ~$2USD),
install manually on your system.
