Hi,

You can retrieve your recorded movies from the Toppy to your PC using an
USB-connection.

Instead of a PC, I want to connect an Xbox360 and a Toppy with an
USB-cable (both have an USB connection/plug) and copy (usb, ftp) the
files directly from the Toppy to the Xbox. Can it be done?

If you can:
- Do you need any software not included in the Toppy/Xbox?
- Are there any web sites describing the process?
- Can you then later copy the files from the XBOX to a XP Media Center
2005 PC (connected to the XBox with ethernet RJ-45 cable)?
- anything else I should think of here?

Thanks for your answers, I really appreciate your comments before
walking into the store and buying both of the boxes (pretty must already
made up my mind, but just realized I need them to work together - and
I'm not sure if they do)

Jyri

never heard of a topfield masterpeice, but you can safely assume that
you won;t be able to copy stuff over from one to the other. the xbox
can read compatible media files from external devices, but there is no
mechanism for copying from one to the other, afaik. it's just not
built into the xbox OS.

OK - the Toppy is a digital Personal Video Recorder with a hard drive.
Toppy is capable to communicate with a PC via USB connection, so you can
download the recorded files to a PC.

More about the Toppy Masterpiece:

But, basically you're saying that in Xbox there isn't any MS Explorer
type of solution to explore the file system of a device connected to the
usb port of the Xbox, and that it's not possible to install such an
application to the xbox? (sorry about these "basic" questions, but I'm
not familiar with xbox yet and I really don't know how close to a PC it
actually is).

Well, you can "explore" a connected device via the Xbox 360 menus, however,
as Chris F. says, I don't believe there's a way to copy the files onto the
Xbox hard drive. Much less get them off of the Xbox onto a PC at a later
date.

OK, I'll just have to start forget that.
Anyway, thanks to both of you.

Of course not.

I'm not certain, but I doubt it. The Xbox 360 is a very closed system,
and its media functions are very limited indeed. I don't think you'd be
able to copy files to it, and even if you could, it's doubtful that the
360 will play whatever format the Topfield records in (I'm assuming
MPEG-2 Video Files).

I've never tried it though, so I could well be wrong :-)

well with the new dash update, the 360 can read compatible media from
external usb devices, data discs and streamed from any pc with WMP11
or WMC installed.

it natively supports only WMV and MPG file formats though, if the box
in question records in a different format, chances are basically nil
that the 360 will be able to play them.

i'd also be doubtful if the 360 could detect it anyway, unless the box
merely identifies itself as an external hard drive, or such similar
device.
