XBox 360: VGA & component OR "splitted" component cables...
|
|
|
| I'm gonna buy a hdtv in a month or so. I also have a Panasonic AE700
projector (HDReady). I would like to connect 360 to both. The only way to do
this would be a) to have a cable that has both component and VGA output (VGA
to TV, component to projector), or a cable with two component outputs. Or a
splitted VGA...?
If I split the vga to two outputs with an adapter, will that result in bad
picture quality?
Unfortunately my amplifier (Sony STR-DB790) has only 1 output for component,
so I can't use that either...
Any ideas?

| So long as you can access the back of your 360 easily then your best bet
would be to get two VGA cables, plug one into the TV and one into the
projector then just swap them over at the back of the xbox as and when you
use the different screens. This would probably also be cheaper. I do this
with my TV and PC monitor (using scart on the TV and VGA on the monitor), so
long as you're careful pulling the cables in and out the xbox you shouldn't
have any problems.

| My advice would be to head down to your local radio shack, and pick up an AB
switch box with the proper inputs. Then just run the video thru the switch,
and leave the audio going into your stereo. Just push a button instead of
swapping cables all the time.

| So far, all the answers assume you want to use them separately. I suspect
you may want to use them concurrently. If so, you need a VGA splitter,
preferably powered, such as this $30 at newegg:

Do you want to use both the TV and projector at the same time, or are you
only going to use one of them at a time?
If you're looking for simultaneous, you can get a VGA splitter box.
Another thing you could try - but I have no idea how well this will work -
is to get some RCA y-cables connectors. You'll need 5 of them (3 for the
video and 2 for the sound.)

| I was attempting a similar setup with my system.. I used the y splitter
cable for vga with another vga to component cable i found online.
There is only one problem I found with this situation. If your other
source (not the LCD / vga HDTV PC monitor) is not capable of HD
signals.. then this wont work, as the VGA cable for xbox doesnt have a
switch to go from regular to HD.
So in my case I'm out of luck, short of swapping xbox cables each time
I want to use the PC Monitor vs the regular tv (which I ended up not
doing). Instead I used an rca to VGA converter box (yeah its not HD
but I'd rather not take the chance of wearing out the video port in the
back of the 360).
If anyone knows of some solution that I didnt think of please let me
know:
IE: Use a VGA HD cable (permanently) in the 360, split that to an HD
LCD and a NON HD regular tv (component).
Cheers

Ah, that's a bit trickier.
You could use the Y-splitter, plug one end into your HD display device,
and plug the other end into a VGA-To-TV convertor. What you need is
something that can down-convert the HD signal to something non-HD.
Something like this: http://www.smarthome.com/7743.html
However, I don't think the resolutions this one supports are compatible
with HDTV resolutions. I'm also not quite sure what will actually be
displayed on the screen. Normally when I try to plug my laptop into my
standard TV, I have to lower the resolution of my laptop, otherwise, I'll
only get part of my desktop on the screen. (it's as if the higher
resolutions are "too big" for my TV.)
This is about the best I could think of. The main problem is that you
need something to do some serious down conversion while maintaining a
reasonably decent end result.
