Author More on Internal hard drive in Xbox360?

Hi all, decided on a new thread.

Everyone seems to think the $399 xbox360 is better.
So my next question is: what is so unique about the
hd in the unit that I can't just remove it and put in a
bigger one? Aren't all interfaces generic?

thanks,
charles.....

I am assuming that the hard drive is locked to the Xbox 360, meaning it will
only work in a
Xbox 360.

What I would like to do is take the 20G'er out and replace
it with a 300 - 400G'er for more space. Is this possible?

later.....

No, not all interfaces are generic.

There are currently three general interfaces for hard drives (IDE,
SATA, SCSI).

The 360 uses a proprietary design and interface.

You can add an external USB hard drive to the 360 if you want to go to
the trouble.

Why bother with a 360 when it sounds like you want a PC gamer station?

As you were told before in a thread you abandoned (starting a new
thread asking the same question is poor Netiquite), the answer is NO.

No, not today. You could on an original Xbox but until the 360 has a mod
available you are stuck with what you can buy from MS.

How did you work that out just by the fact the chap wants a bigger hard
drive. I think everyone that owns a 360 wants a bigger disk.

If he wants a 300GB hard drive in a game console, he obviously wants to
use it for something more than just playing games. Especially
considering the 360 doesn't run games loaded exclusively from the hard
drive.

That's what a computer is for.

I have yet to hear of any reasonable rational for turning a game
console into a multimedia center. Especially one that has a history of
a high level of failures.

Original question was which machine to buy.
I mentioned changing hd's as a secondary question
and since everyone said to get the more expesive
one I thought the question was different enough
to start a new thread. If I offended you or
ruffled your feathers I am sorry.

Not yet, at least. Both the PS2 and Xbox were hacked to allow such a
thing and it'd be foolish to assume the 360 won't be similarly hacked.

So...I can put the games on my computers HDD and run them over the network
to the 360? That'd be a novel idea...but fairly pointless given how slow
ethernet is compared to your average hard drive.

I can think of quite a few.

As a multimedia player, it should be able to play content - in ANY format
- from the network, locally attached storage (eg. USB dongle or hard drive)
or internal storage.

Being able to store greater amounts of stuff on the internal drive would
allow you to more easily 'take it with you'. You could have your games,
music and movies all in a single device requiring no external media. Even
ignoring the portability issue, the hard drive will be much faster than
the DVD drive, which means that if you could play ISO images from the hard
drive, your load times would be significantly reduced.

None of which is possible today, but again, considering what happend with
Xbox, it's pretty safe to assume that it will be at some point.

But for now, I'd just advise the OP buying the Premium pack with its 20GB
HDD and make due for now.

What the original poster was looking for was an Xbox 360-centric hard
drive.

What you describe would be better served using a USB external hard
drive, which are can be used on a 360 now.

The USB external drive could be swapped between the console and a
Windows XP (and Vista in the future) computer.

I'm sure you can put in a bigger disk when MS comes out with one(and there
will be), but it'd have to be made from microsoft, not the generic IDE
computer hard drives.

BTW, the HD in 360 is not actually IN the console, it's connected by sitting
on top of the unit and is easily removable. My thinking is they're making
it easier for you to upgrade to bigger drive when it comes out.

Not sure what you mean 'sitting ontop'. Mine is certainly inside.

No it isnt. The drive is that little protrusion on 1 side of the box and is
removeable without opening the box. If you dont have this your Xbox does
not have a harddrive.

So I was right to begin with. I wasn't 100% sure, so I sort of tried to

What do you mean the 'outside' of the case. There's no hard drive on the
outside of mine and I have the hard drive

OK, I see what you mean. I guess it is just semantics. I still consider
that 'inside the case' as it is part of the case, but it does clip on.

An external USB HDD might be OK for some things - like playing music or
video files.

Having it internal, however, would mean there's less stuff to carry
around and less stuff to plug in.

Also, an internal interface is going to be much faster than USB which
would be a concern if you were interested in playing 360 games directly
off the HDD.

I don't think video.
Only pictures and musics, no ?

Video also with the Latest 360 Update, but only in WMV I think or whatever
the Windows Video format is called. There is not a option in the Menu to
access a external USB drive or even from a CD or DVD popped into the 360.
Or you can now stream from a XP PC.
