Local retailer has 2 versions of Xbox360, the $299 version and the $399
version.

I would like to install a 300G hd in the machine. Should I save the 100
bucks and get the cheaper one?

thanks,
charles.....

The difference is the core system ($299) doesn't have a hard drive, HD
AV cables or wireless controller.

The premium system ($399) has a 20GB hard drive, the HD AV cables and a
wireless controller.

There are three reasons for going with the premium system: the hard
drive ($99), the HD AV cables ($49 if bought separately) and the
wireless controller ($39 if bought separately). The core system doesn't
come with any of those.

The only hard drive available for the 360 is 20GB. Microsoft is rumored
to be working on a 60GB drive.

No.

You will want the hard drive, wireless controller and HD AV cables. And
to buy them separately will cost you a lot more than $100.

It also has everything you need for Xbox Live. The core system doesn't.

If you find a place online to buy a wireless controller for $39 (or close to
that), then you'd be lucky, but then still pay for shipping. Almost all
retailers sell that controller for $49.99. But in essence to the OP's query,
you are totally correct in your recommendation for the premium system.

I got the costs of the HD AV cables and wireless controller mixed.

The wireless controller is $49.99, the HD AV cables are $39.99.
