Hi,

How difficult/expensive will it be to add 1080p
capability to the Xbox360? Any other thoughts?

thanks,
charles.....

According to Xbox.com, an update will be available later this year that will
allow the 360 to output 1080p. Should be free. However, there's a bit of
debate about performance, and possibly needing new cables.

As far as I know, 1080p requires the use of either DVI or HDMI (did I
get that right? It's late and I'm tired) cables. My XBox 360 came
with component cables, so I would expect to have to either buy new
cables or an adaptor.

There's a lot of info here:
http://www.majornelson.com/archive/...y-Settings.aspx

It will be a free download, and it will _not_ require HDMI or DVI.

or VGA.

It'll be (or already is) a free software update. Just connect to Live
(don't need a subscription) and it'll download the update.

I would assume later versions of the 360 would have it pre-installed, but
that's not an issue.

You should be able to take advantage of 1080p even with the component
cables. VGA would also work. The 360 doesn't currentally support DVI or
HDMI but this isn't an issue for games anyways.

The 360 is getting a software upgrade in November! One of the added
features is 1080P. There are Limits though because of Copy protection.
You'll get 1080P for Games using the Component Cable, but you won't get DVD
Upconvertion using them. Also not many HDTV's support 1080P using Component
cables. Some do, Most don't, only though VGA and HDMI.

You would need a VGA connection. If you get the HD-DVD drive add-on, you
can watch Movies in 1080P though VGA ONLY. Since HDTV's that support 1080P
also have a VGA port besides HDMI, you'll be fine. Still nothing on HDMI
support,and I wouldn't count on it.
