| Mine was manufactured in October, 2005, and among the original releases. I
haven't had a single issue, but I have made sure the power supply is resting
on its "feet" and has plenty of breathing room to cool, and I don't move the
unit (changing how it sits) while it is running.

| Mine locks up every once in a while. Need For Speed was the worst, I
think.
But, I played Ghost Recon all day Saturday without an issue.
As for if I would recommend it, I guess it depends on whether you like
the games. I prefer BF2 for military shooters, and love the XBOX for
sports games. I enjoyed NFS, and Tomb Raider. I haven't played alot
of the newer games, mostly due to wanting to finish FIFA, Madden, Fight
Night, and start on NHL 07.
I love mine, and the media connection to the Media PC is very handy.

| Amazing how people will pay hand over fist in $$$'s for hardware that
overheats and locks up. Meanwhile, Microsoft is laughing all the way to the
bank. When will they offer the XB360 power supply dangling hook kit I
wonder? =)

I've had my 360 for about 6 months now and in that time it's probably
on for about 7-8 hours a day. I have 4 roomates who play it constantly.
I've had absolutly no problems with it. There's days where it's
literally being played from 9am to midnight. We're all BF2 freaks. I
think MS will be going to the bank, but not because the 360 is a
ripoff. It's because they're making quality games. I highly reccomend
the 360.
Actually, I just thought of one problem. The controller is not as good
as it was when I first got it and I should probably replace it. That's
pretty much the only problem I've had. Besides losing a xbox live
headset to a temper tantrum!

At the other end of the spectrum, I just returned our three week old 360 and
got a new one. It just flat died. Wouldn't load any games. Blinking red
lights. Just dead.

| It's not useful as a 100% media center extender, but for the price, it
plays games & is an extender. That's useful.
Plus, I just turn up the TV and don't hear the XBOX.

Well, I came to this group to get a feel for this as well. I've now have 2
stepsons and if they makes the As on their report cards, I've commited to
getting them their Xbox360s for Christmas. I'm not a console person myself
(I'm a PC Gamer) so I've only been on the edge of the problems with the
XBox360.
I'm trying to get a feel if this is going to be a decision I regret or not,
has I'll never hear the end of it, if the Xbox360 crashes all the time. I'm
currently pro Xbox 360 over Playstation 3, just because it's an American
product over import (Not that I don't buy imports, I just try to buy
american when I can)
Anyways, I'm not sure I've gotten the warm and fuzzy yet, since I see in
other posts people are still talking about sending Xboxes back for various
problems. Seems lie the failure rate is a bit high.
Any numbers out there, that would help me see things different ?

| Dale, I've had my "built in October 2005" Xbox 360 since early December last
year, and have not had a problem with it. We've got lots of various games,
lots of the arcade games which have been available for download to the hard
drive from Xbox Live's Marketplace, and thoroughly enjoy it. It is also
used as an extender with a Media Center Edition computer.
In all honesty, when you see posts of complaints about the Xbox 360 I would
consider the issue and not necessarily the length of the threads. For every
complaint, there are probably several thousand or more of us who haven't
posted because we haven't had an issue.
And, please keep in mind I'm not an employee of Microsoft nor do I have any
interest in promoting Xbox 360 over any Sony product. I just think it is a
very good machine, and worth the investment for family/personal
entertainment.

| Well, I can only add my personal experience, but I don't think it is that
uncommon. I believe the 360 is a great machine that has an inherent design
flaw in its cooling.
We bought one 4 weeks ago. It lasted started having problems in the first
week and got so bad it died last Sunday.
Had it replace Monday.
Replacement died on Wednesday.
We'll see if number 3 works out.
I agree that the percentage of failures is likely low, as a number, but WAY
too high. Any product that springs up an entire industry of external
coolers has a problem.

| Thanks Chris and Tom for your feedback.
Chris, I'm trying to keep in mind that for every problem I hear about, there
is probably 10 people who don't have a problem. But that can be a two way
street. As I'm sure the actual majority of Xbox users don't do usenet. So
it's hard to get a full sampling of what's wrong, since only the more
tecnical minded people tend to report in Usenet and other places like web
forums.
I did read an article off one of the sites that Microsoft has acknoledge a
problem and is extending the warranty on some Xbox360s and are reimbursing
some for repair cost.
As with any product whether Xbox360 or a laptops with a Sony battery
installed, there is going to be X number of failures. Heck I bought a new
Car last year and there was a software bug that causes the navigation
system\CD player to reboot itself. But that doesn't mean the car or car
maker is crappy. Bugs happen !
Tom, I think you're point is what I'm looking at right now. In that, most of
what I read is about the power supply being the root of all X360 evil. I
would think by now (a year later) the newer systems would have a better
design, but maybe in the rush just to get them out there and the consumers
money in hand before the PS3 and Wii are released MS is taking the attitude
of certain PC companies in that they'll fix the problem after the fact.
Compaq did that a few years back. They shipped system they knew had bugs and
would mostly likely lock up on boot, but kept shoveling them out the door
and worried about fixing them later (after cash in hand)
On the flip side, the PC world has tons of aftermarket add-ons. In fact, it
was consider common practice among the more hard core PC guys to throw away
the Heatsink fan that came with AMD cpus and use a better one, as the AMD
HSF just didn't get the job done. I myself always use a 3rd party HSF
whether it's AMD or Intel. I understand that the Console world is suppose to
be a clean slick package that any 10 year old can use. But I think with the
power the new systems are sucking and performing at, it's going to be harder
and harder to have a one design works everywhere model.
Again, thanks for the feedback. Guess I'll just keep watching and maybe
start exploring the aftermarket cooling options as well.

| Good approach, Dale. I'd also nose around www.xbox.com and the forums over
there. Take a look at the Xbox 360 System section. There are five
different forums which may give you some additional information.

on it and blows air in. I think, it works from what people tell me.
The thing does run hot.

| Yes, I suspect it does work. I just don't believe it should be necessary.
I don't want to bungee cord a giant fan to the front of my car either, even
if someone makes a nice attractive one. I expect the vendor to understand
the cooling requirements and to get it right.

| I've made up my mind now
I Saw demos of several games on TV over the weekend and there are a couple
of questions
At the moment I am playing Call of Duty on the normal Xbox and was wondering
if someone could tell me what it is like playing it on the Xbox Live ??
Do you just join in a game or do you have to start a game and people have to
join in ???
And is it Better on the 360 ?
Never used the live function before but routing a network cable around my

Yes the 360 is better. Live is a great feature along with arcade. Playing

good people and some bad. Well worth the effort and expense.
