Information on Xbox NTSC J

| I was gifted an Xbox ... with NTSC J configuration. I have been desparately
trying to get original titles to start using my Xbox. While I was asking
around, I was told that NTSC J means that the games would be in Japanese. Is
that true? I don't know Japanese ... If it is is there a solution to my issue?

For licensing reasons, game consoles sold in different countries will
generally only play games that are also sold in that country. The Xbox you
happen to have been given as a gift will only play games that are
available at retail in Japan. This doesn't necessarily mean that the
displayed language of the game will always be Japanese; as a matter of
fact, most of the games which were originally developed by American
developers will tend to give you the option to choose what language you
want displayed. Unfortunately, this also means that games sold on American
shelves won't run on your console.
You can explore the option of modification, which a chip or a BIOS ROM
flash, or you can check out the option of trading your hardware for a
local version. Not speaking for myself here, but I'm sure there's somebody
out there with a soldering iron and a dream who would like to see the
internals of a JPN-region Xbox to see if there are any differences worth
noting. But the short answer is, your Xbox won't play US-region games
right out of the box. You might want to use your favorite search engine to
look over previous discussion about why different video game and motion
picture regions exist, and why the companies that make them have an
interest in restricting sales this way.
-KKC, who finally got his Xbox Media Center installation working the way
he likes it.

The Japanese Xbox can be configured very easily to display menus in English
(I have one) so that should not be a concern.
Keep in mind though, that without modding it, you will not be able to play
games from other regions. Most games are perfectly playable with minimal
issues if you cannot read Japanese. There are some RPG's, etc that you would
have trouble with.
The other issue is, if you don't live in Asia you will have a tough time
finding games that will work on your NTSC J Xbox.
Good luck!

In May of 2004, I was sold the wrong item by a California eBay seller.
After attempting to correspond with the guy and exchange it for the right
item, I figured out that he had no interest in correcting the issue. eBay
and Paypal decided that it was more important to them to save money than
to keep me as a customer, and so did nothing to help me get my money back.
Every excuse I get, I tell that story and ask people not to use eBay.
eBay is corrupt and excessive, and amount of time and money they expend
for legal services bears that out. I only lost out on $150, but I decided
that it was worth taking my business elsewhere, and I urge everyone to do
the same. You are, of course, free to do as you with in an open market.
-KKC, who enjoys the permanent Dejanews archive. Yes, I know Google
renamed it to something ridiculous now...
