WMP Star Ratings not copied over to MCX or laptop
|
|
| CJSnet 2004-12-12, 6:46 am |
| Hi, I have Windows Media Player (WMP) 10 on my desktop PC, and also have a
Linksys Media Center Extender (MCX), an Xbox running MCX for Xbox, and a
laptop.
In the MCX devices when I Add Music, all my tracks are added without the
ratings I gave them in WMP on the desktop computer. The same happens if I
sync or copy the tracks to my laptop - all ratings are lost and revert to
3-stars/unrated.
This means auto playlists like '4 or 5 star rated' do not find any tracks in
the MCX devices, or on the laptop.
Rather frustrating after hours of rating all the tracks. Is there any way
to ensure these are in fact copied over to other machines?
--
Thanks.

| With the newsgroups you've posted to, you missed the one where the most help
may be obtained: microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter.portable 8-) I
don't know the answer.

You can *try* setting the feature Tools > Options >Library: [ ] maintain
my star ratings as global ratings in the media files. However, WMP gives
no indication of which pieces of metadata it has touched, and there is
no useful documentation for its metadata handling (much of which is broken).

| Hmm, well that was already ticked but thanks anyway. Anyone else got any
ideas?

| Thanks Chris, but I thought that group referred to portable music players of
the iPod variety, which the Xbox and a Laptop are not. Will give it a go
anyway.

hoo-boy. I went through this w/ my ipod. Good luck w/ your particular
problem. I ended up using the ipod plug-in to the winamp media library to
transpose all my ratings over. Eph-pod helped w/ converting the ratings as
well. I wish you luck, re-rating a big library ain't fun. (did I mention
that itunes eats ratings at will?)

| My workaround for this daft issue was to drag the contents of my
'Favorites - 4 and 5 star rated' auto-playlist into a new normal Playlist
called 'Favourites'. In future instead of rating music, I will just add my
faves to that playlist. The MCX devices pick it up and play it just fine.
Still ridiculous that ratings are lost on their way from the MCE machine to
the MCX and laptops!

| By default, ratings are stored in your library database, not in your .wma
files. To force Windows Media Player 10 to store your ratings in your .wma
files, do the following:
1. On the "Tools" menu, click "Options."
2. Click the "Library" tab, and then select the "Maintain my star ratings as
global ratings in the media files" check box.

That has been noted before in this thread. However if your files happen
to be read-only, as is quite often the case when they are
copied/restored from a CD, then WMP silently fails in writing metadata.
There is also no guaranteed time-scale for WMP to do any of these
updates. There's also no published documentation as to what happens with
other file-types: the dialog text simply says "media files", which in
WMP can variously mean WMA, MP3, WAV, MIDI, as well as movie or static
image files.

| CJSnet 2004-12-22, 5:47 pm |
| Nice idea that, but setting everything to read only and reticking the 'star
ratings as global ratings' option simply does not work. Still no songs on
the MCX device are rated, even if I re-add all music over again from my MCE
PC to the MCX.

| CJSnet ... the solution is as follows:
1) On your originating PC and your destination Media Center download and
install the "Ratings Migration Powertoy" for Media Player 9 (which works
fine for Media Player 10) from the Microsoft web-site. 2) On your
originating PC start Media Player: Tools->Plugins->Ratings Migration, Select
Backup Ratings (wait awhile for a big collection). Backup Ratings will write
your ratings Meta-data into the wma files. 3) Copy your files to the Media
Center 4) Point Media Player on the Media Center to the new files
Options->Monitor Folders. This is a background task so get some coffee while
Media Player populates its library. Wait until it is done and shows all your
files in the Library. 5) On the Media Center in Media Player:
Tools->Plugins->Ratings Migration, Select Restore Ratings (get a coffee
refill). 6) All your ratings are now restored. You can see them if you look
at file info ("i" on remote), either on a Media Center or an extender. From
Media Player on MCE 2005, they can be seen as well.
Note: Autoplaylists on the Media Center will work fine with the ratings.
Note: Autoplaylists on a Media Center extender do not (yet) work with the
ratings, even though they appear on the file metadata when browsed from an
extender. I expect to have this solved shortly and plan to post a solution.
Any help from Microsoft would be appreciated as well.

| Oops... can't see them on the Extender yet, but still usable on the
destination MC. I am working on a solution to restoring the ratings to the
MCX1 (Extender) User account Media Library. Just gotta figure out how to
open it with Media Player.

| Thanks Mark. When you say "destination MC", in my case there is no
destination MCE PC. I have one main MCE PC and 2 Extenders. The problem is
getting the ratings and Favorites AutoPlaylist on the *Extender* to work.
I take it this will not work as per your current solution but look forward
to you posting here when you have finally cracked it!

| I'm having the same issue. I've tried all resolutions. It seems that the
option of maintaining ratings in the files would, indeed, be the first step
but how to get the MCE to use the ratings in the files as opposed to it's own
db?
Anyone else have a solution?

| Maybe that helps: there's a plug-in called "Ratings Migration PowerToy"
which allows you to save and restore your ratings. Download at:
