Kutaragi Takes Shots at Xbox 360
June 8, 2005 - Outspoken Sony Computer Entertainment chief Ken Kutaragi is
in the news again. In an interview hosted by Japanese technology site PC
Watch, the father of the PlayStation brand continues Sony's corporate
bashing of the Xbox 360 with one of the sharpest attacks yet since the
original Xbox 1.5 comment.
When asked about the difference between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360,
Kutaragi responds, "This time, Microsoft has stated clearly that it is going
after the PlayStation. However, they're going not after the PlayStation 3,
but the PlayStation 2. They were looking at 2, and that's why [Xbox 360]
became like that."
Kutaragi reminisces about the unveiling of the original PlayStation and how
many compared the system with 3DO, stating that both could do 3D graphics.
"It was tough," he states. "Even after we said that the PS1 is actually
doing 3D calculations while the other one isn't, people still insisted that
they both had CD-ROM drives and 3D graphics. I believe that many people,
even when looking at specs, don't understand the differences."
Things are similar this time around, according to Kutaragi, who explains,
"This time, people probably won't be able to understand the difference
between PS3 and Xbox 360 if the spec charts are just lined up. However, at
E3, a suitable number of people said that they were glad they came and saw
rather than just looking at the specs. When the PS3 is actually released,
this will spread and people will come to understand."
Commenting on the demos shown by Microsoft and Sony at their respective
conferences, Kutaragi adds, "One famous reporter let slip, Xbox is 1.5, the
PS is more than what I was expecting, so it's 3.5."
I didn't say it...

Why?
Do yah think MS might cut into that 100+ million PS2 sales with the 360 ;-)
I really don't think Sony is worried in this next gen. It is going to take a
bit longer for MS to be a serious threat to Sony's userbase.

I don't see why, Sony annihilated the two hardware and software giants in
their first generation. Gaming is unpredictable, although that said the more
mass-market and casual it becomes, the more predictable it will become.
Harry Potter 4 WILL get to number one. And yes, I suspect PS3 will win this
gen on name alone, but it can't do it forever (at least I hope it can't).

But Sony did it out of the gate.

It already is mass-market and casual. Die hard gamers are the minority not
the norm.

Nothing last forever but IMHO this next gen is already a lock for Sony.
They have made all the right moves and they have all the momentum. I don't
see them slowing down a notch, if anything they are only gaining speed and
their userbase is only going to keep on growing and growing and growing.

I can see price being a major factor though. I imagine that Xbox 360 will be
out here at £200 before Christmas. I very much doubt we'll see PS3 at less
than £399 and before next winter. Besides, I imagine that this generation
will see the end of any product catering for the people who actually care
about a good game and not recreating a film badly. Come PS4 I really fear
there will be literally nothing but sequels and tie-ins. And Nintendo have
just gone and lost several million pre-orders for Revolution by announcing
they're doing it all wrong. It's only a matter of time.

HAHAHAHAHA!
I wish!
Seriously, you know what rip-off Britain is like. It won't be much less
than £300.

No they didn't. They created a bigger market. They didn't cut into a market,
they made it bigger and more commercial, and they made that market their
own. This is where Microsoft is having trouble, they're trying to steal the
market from Sony.

| I agree. When a CEO starts spouting off about how weak the compitition is,
you know they are giving it a great deal of thought. Despite the idea that
Sony's name brand alone will help them win, that isn't the case. Novell
felt pretty good about the NOS war, when they still had > 80% marketshare.
Netscape didn't sweat the browser war, when they had > 80% marketshare.
Nintendo didn't give Sony a second thought, when they touted proudly "get N
or get out" with the console business firmly in their grasp. Things do
change, sometimes slowly or quickly. And Sony isn't fighting some
financially weak Sega off this time, that they can simply out wait.
Microsoft has the assets from other divisions to push the Xbox indefinitely.
Microsoft also doesn't have any debt, Sony does however. If Microsoft and
Sony both lose several billion on console hardware in the next couple of
years, who is most likely to cry uncle first? Financially speaking, it
won't be Microsoft. The thing is, Sony can't afford not to dominate the
market. They need the game and accessory sales that come from that
position. If the PS3 does win marketshare but only by 5% or 10%, it's going
to put Sony in a bit of a hurt. Plus, J Allard has shown himself to be a
man of vision. Everything he's planned for the Xbox has met his
expectations. Now if he is expecting the Xbox 360 to pull ahead, I wouldn't
bet against him personally.

Two points:
1. The dollar is now so weak that the vast majority of things seem to be
closer to the 70-80% mark of their dollar equivalent, not the 100% as it was
a few years ago.
2. MS released Xbox at £300. Five people bought it, so after a few weeks
they promptly looked like complete idiots by dropping it to £200 and avoided
angering people by giving all the early adopters free games and pads. I
don't see them making this mistake again.
Given this, I expect £199, with £249 being an absolute maximum.
