Since no one has given any answers other than "You put your mod chip in
wrong" I'm going to try asking again.

I got my Xbox a couple of months ago from my dad who had had it for a
little over a year and had barely played it. It worked find for him
and when I got it it was wroking fine for a while. Then it started
giving me Christmas lights every once in a while. If I turned it off
and left it for a while it would be ok. Now I can't get it to do
anything but Christmas lights. This Xbox has never been modded, no mod
chip has ever even looked at it. The first time this machine had been
opened was today because I was trying to fix it. Does anyone have any
idea what is wrong with it and/or how to fix it.

See the Xbox manual page 16 for details of the various status light flashing
combinations and the solutions.

At some point you do have to weigh the BER point of a device for your use.
If it is going to cost ~2/3 of the price of a new one with the knowledge
that it could soon be replaced by a 360 (that is, if your title collection
is compatible ), then it is a tough decision. However, if you do want to
tackle self repair, then one site start with for info (you may have to dig a
bit ) can be found here:

http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/repairs.htm

I do have to warn you, though - the kind of error you have might be hard to
solve if it is an onboard problem.

I've checked the connections, they are all good. Christmas lights
means I push the power button and I get the following sequence, green,
off, green, off, green, flashing green and red. My manual says nothing
about flashing sequences, but the websites I've seen say its a system
failure (http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/system_failure.htm). I
already called 1-800-4myxbox, and they said it needs to be repaired
about $75 plus S/H (might as well get a new one or wait for 360). So
I was hoping to repair it myself, but I can't find much info.

Thanks

Well, ya could wrap some gifts and put it around it.
At least it will serve some kind of purpose.

Since it worked at times, I would look for a simple solution. In this case,
verify that the audio/video plug is fully inserted into the unit. If that
fails it might be good to take Mike's advice and reference the manual.
After that, if still unclear call 1800 - 4 myxbox.

Good Luck

Did you actually look in the manual ?
See page 16 Troubleshooting
Where we talk about the different flashing sequences.

I have copied the relevent section below for you

Status Indicator Light Flashes Continually
The status indicator light should be green while the Xbox video
game system is on, or flash green when you press the eject
button. If the status indicator light flashes continually during
operation, the Xbox video game system has an internal problem:
.. Continual orange flashing: The Xbox console is too hot
and will not play games until cooled. Place the Xbox
console in a well-ventilated area away from other heat
sources. Once the console cools, the flashing will stop
and the Xbox video game system can be played. For
more information, see Selecting a Location for the
Xbox Console on page 7.
.. Continual green and orange flashing: The AV cable is
not connected properly. Connect according to the
instructions in Connecting to a TV on page 8.
.. All other patterns: Internal problem requires service.
Contact Xbox Customer Support according to the
instructions in If You Need Help... on page 17.

Um, so you say you've been to the llama xbox site, and I reply that you
should go to the llama xbox site...

Wow, that consultant bit is bleeding through more than I realize... My bad.

as the other poster said, xbox scene may have some info if you can wade
through the mod info. You can also check:
