I got the impression that this "fill in" does not work always as it
depends on the weather condition while you explore uncharted regions.

I never noticed that but then I only played the game for a couple of
hours. It rained during many of my exploration times and I did not
realize that weather does influence the way the map is filled in. Most
interesting.

I've has similar experiences and noticed that when running the map
doesn't "fill in" as much as if you take your time, walk, and look
around. Also, weather/day/night/elevation seems to have a impact
sometimes on how the map fills in.

Worth trying out and reporting back.

Thanks to everyone. But the automap isn't filling in at all, even in
good weather, and in an area I've explored at length. I've been near
Seyda Neen for quite a while (I've been doing quests and strolling
around for a couple of hours now) and it's completely black still.

Does this sound right? It definitely seems messed up to me. I never
had this problem with the PC version.

Can you see *any* detail if you crank the brightness way up on your TV?

None at all.

Judging from the post below, I'm guessing it really is a bad disc or a
bug. I guess I'll try another copy.

It seems highly improbably that a bad disc would manifest itself as a
bug in the software, but I have no alternate explanation.

First, try deleting the game from the hard disk, and then loading it again.
It might not work, but it's an easy thing to try.
