XBox has more power, but PS2 has better games...right?
|

| This is the old mantra people are saying, but I just to really think about
this, is it true anymore. Let's see;
PS2 used to have GT, now XBox has Forza.
PS2 used to have better rpg games, now we have KOTOR, KOTOR2, Fable and Jade
Empire for XBox.
There's nothing like Halo (or Halo2) on PS2.
etc etc
So while PS2 probably has better (and more selection for) platform games,
the argument about PS2 having better games is no more really valid. PS2 also
has more games for young kids, since XBox has always been targeted to more
mature audience.
Just a thought.

Yeah PS2 fanboys can't fall back on that anymore. PS2 still has a greater
number of games, but that doesn't mean it has better games. Today, for every
one of PS2's best games, there is an Xbox game just as good, or better..
Forza, for example, has bested the PS2's flagship title by great surprise.
Everyone knew it was going to be good, but i don't think people really
expected it to knock GT4 off the top. I was never a fan of cutesy Final
Fantasy games, so the Xbox already had it beat in the RPG realm for me.
Tekken is a great game, but everyone knows that DOA on Xbox has always held
the fighting crown for this gen. GTA always comes to Xbox a few months after
PS2, and of course is always the better version. And everyone knows now the
dud that Killzone ended up being.. And to think they use to call it the Halo
Killer... LOL. All sports games are always superior on Xbox. I have always
been the type of person that prefers Quality over Quantity, and so the Xbox
has always been on top in that respect.
I sincerely hope that this Xbox 360 launch isn't going to be another
dreamcast.. This coming scenario seems frighteningly familiar. I can see the
Xbox 360 with a massive, successful launch, only to be brought down later by
Sony's deceiving marketing hype by showing us insanely fantastic tech demos
with quality that will never actually see the light of day on their system,
EVER.

Let me note that I own an Xbox and do NOT own a PS2. I am currently very
happy with having purchased an Xbox, but there were times early on when I
questioned whether or not I should have purchased an Xbox over a PS2.
During the early period, I was sustained mostly by by Halo and Mech Assault.
Oh and also Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I'm a big fan of the show and the game
was really good and showed detail that indicated it was developed by folks
who did their research and stayed pretty faithful to the series) which ws
the game that really put me over the top on deciding to purchase an Xbox.
I am currently undecided on whether to go with X360 or PS3, but I've got
plenty of time to decide. One major factor is Microsofts excellent Xbox
Live (XBL) online service. XBL is probably the biggest thing MS has going
for it in building brand loyalty. Having gotten used to XBL, I'm not sure
I'd want to go with Sony's ad hoc networking for their online games.

I haven't played Forza yet, but all of the reviews point to this as being a
big win. I'm not much of a driving game fan, but Microsoft filled a
critical need with this title since lots of the gaming public love racing
games (as is illustrated by the HUGE number of racing titles released on
Xbox and on PS2).
[vbcol=seagreen]
I'm more into action oriented RPGs like the Baldur's Gate series. I did get
heavily into Morrowind, way after it's release. The graphics by that time
looked very primative, but the free-roaming open ended game play really
pulled me in and sucked away hours and days of my free time.

Yep, the Halo series is the jewel in Microsoft's gaming crown. Purchasing
Bungie was a great move for Microsoft. I only wish Bungie were able to do a
better job consulting with Microsofts other studios. I had high hopes for
Brute Force, which I found to be a fun and enjoyable game, albeit one with
lots of flaws. I don't think it was bad that Brute Force was third-person
game, I viewed third-person as a strength which simply wasn't properly
handled. When fighting you could see your team mates diving out of the way
of fire and doing rolls and such which was *really* cool, but there was NO
way to control your character to do the same. They should have allowed
control of the characters to let them crawl, climb, dive for cover, etc. I
definitely liked the way Brute Force handled split screen, throwing
grenades, and issuing commands to team mates (although this last item
needed a couple more iterations of refinement).
[vbcol=seagreen]
In order to win the next round, Microsoft needs to ensure a well-round
library. They need to be able to appeal to a wider audience across the
board and that includes kids and also more games which appeal to women.
Hopefully, Microsoft and/or third party vendors will come out with some
strong platformers within the first 6 months of the X360 release.

PS2 still holds the crown for RPGs, since they've got such a wide variety of
them. They also have the only multi-player online RPGs with the Champions
of Norrath series. I can't understand how Microsoft let that happen as Xbox
Live is really set up to handle this type of game play so much better than
Sony's ad hoc networking scheme.

Sorry, that opinion is far from universal. DoA is probably the prettiest
graphically, but many gamers and most game critics view the Virtua Fighter
series to be a better fighting games. I was *very* dissappointed that VF4
and then VF4 Evolution remained PS2 exclusives. Microsoft really needs to
do a much better job with this for the X360. I really want to see VF5 on
the 360, especially with online gaming capability.
The Xbox didn't get Sega's most popular and commercial titles in the current
gaming generation. Xbox got the also rans, some of the best games played by
the fewest people. Panzer Dragoon, Shenmue, and Otagi might be great games
but they don't measure up to the popularity and commercial appeal of Virtua
Fighter series and Sonic (and not the dreadful Sonic Heroes).

Yes and Microsoft labeled Brute Force as a Halo killer too. Which let them
sell tons of copies initially, but hurt them in the long run. Expectations
were too high, and the game was never considered on its own merits.

The first year Xbox wasn't even close to being on top. It wasn't even until
about 18 months in that Xbox's game library game close to competing with
PS2's. *NOW*, the Xbox library's quality of titles is definitely superior
to PS2's but PS2 still has a greater breadth of selection and there are a
few areas where Xbox still can't compete since there are no similar game
titles.

I hope that Xbox 360 launch goes with quality over quantity. For the first
year Xbox had WAY too many crappy games. Halo wa the only truely great game
in the first year of launch. There were a few good games - such as DoA, but
the ratio of good games to bad was skewed heavily on the side of bad games.
I think X360 will be strongest with people who want a quality online gaming
experience. I think Microsoft has the right vision there and the next
generation of XBL is the place to be for online gaming.

| Yeah, XBL is where XBOX completely outperforms online capabilities of
current gen systems. Also, games on the XBOX are commonly thought to
be the best quality and best graphically in recent months because of
the increased capabilities due to more advanced hardware. (although i
have thought that games on xbox where always better)
XBOX 360 is going to ROCK!!!
