Author Constant connection issues since Update to 1.01
CJSnet

Hi, I have an MCE 2005 PC and 2 Extenders:
Linksys Extender
Extender for Xbox

Back in Jan I updated the Linksys, and the PC software, to the latest
version. Everything ran smoothly.

2 weeks ago I received and installed the 1.01 Xbox CDs. Ever since then, I
get constant but intermittent problems connection, such as:

- Turn on Xbox, and it says 'Connecting...' for 3 mins then goes to a
'cannot connect' screen and asks me to press OK to try again, which
continues not to work.

- Turn on Linksys, and it goes to the Setup Key display screen, but also
says 'connected to wired network'. It just says it cannot connect to the
MCE PC but if I want to associate with a different PC use that key.

I have done a complete uninstall of the Extender software from the MCE PC,
then reinstalled 1.01 directly, and reassociated both Extenders. Problems
persist.

I have all Windows Updates.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You need to ensure that if your MCE system's firewall is turned on that =
ports 3389 and 3390 are open. These are the ports that are used by the =
MCX devices.

Strangely Remote Desktop was unticked, although I use it. There is no entry
for 3390. I only use the SP2 firewall so surely MCX software should have
added an entry there?

Also, would its absence explain why 50% of the time the MCX devices connect
just fine?

PS: Should I open those ports on my router too? Or is that dangerous.
Again they were never opened before and it used to work just fine before I
upgraded to 1.01.

Hi,

No, you only need to open them on the destination machine, so that it =
can be accessed via the LAN. =20

And no, this, to me, wouldn't explain why they would connect half the =
time. 3390 is used by the Extenders, and when you run the Host Setup CD =
it should open any ports that are needed in the firewall.=20

CJSnet,

In my experience, the 1.01 setup was a lot more finicky than the original
one. I ran into an annoying timing issue regarding entering the setup key on
my MCE PC while setting it up. But once I got past that, I have had no issues
to speak of.

Did you try removing the memory block occupied by the MCX "game" on your
XBox? If you haven't, I would recommend doing that.

HTH,
Pat

Thanks. For now, manually opening 3390 on XP SP2 firewall seems to have
helped, but why I should have to do that I'm not sure.

How would I delete the memory block you speak of?

From the XBox main screen, the one you get with no disc in the drive. I =
believe its under the Memory section, but don't have one in front of me, =
right now to verify. =20

What Pat is suggesting is that you delete the small bit of data that =
tells the XBox its associated with your Media Center PC. If you do, =
you'll have to reassociate it through the Extender Manager applet.

Since you already got it working, you don't really have to do it, but here's
how you would go about removing the block of memory from your XBox, in case
you are curious:

Remove any game disk from your XBox. If you have XBox Live updates, you will
probably be prompted to sign in to your account. Press the "B" button on your
controller till you get to the XBox "home" screen. I have to do this twice.
Select Memory from the main menu.

If you don't have any memory module on your controller, you should only see
the XBox Hard Disk memory (50,000+ blocks on my box). Press A to select. This
brings us the games and the parts of each game stored. point the left
joystick down or up to scroll thru the games till you come to the Media
Center Extender block. Select this by pressing A. Press A again to delete the
memory occupied by the MCX.

This will remove any memory of the extender being associated with your MCE
from your XBox. I also wanted to add that I completely disabled my SP2
firewall prior to installing the upgrade.

Well the Xbox seems to be behaving now.

The Linksys however still gives problems. I get error code 00020002 with a
message on the TV saying that the PC is either on standby, or busy
processing info (it's on and free).

If I reboot the PC the Linksys then connects fine. This happens
repetitively.

Any ideas?

PS: Just noticed that the Media Center Extender Manager reports that the
Linksys is 'connected' at the same time that the Linksys shows the above
error.

Hi again,

The 00020002 error seems to be related to 3rd party software that the =
MCX device cannot display properly. DVD Region free is one culprit =
that's mentioned. Even trying to run a BAT file on the MCX account's =
logon can cause it.

I'd recommend looking through the results here:
