XBox Access Problem

| Hello All,
I am a newbie here, so sorry in advance if this issue has been discussed in
the past. I have been having problems with my XBox ever since I bought it a
few years ago. The problem is my XBox has a hard time reading movies and
XBox games. I have to eject the game or movie 15 times before the game comes
on. When I insert the disc my XBox tries to read it however a pop up
indicates that there is a problem with my disc. I look at the disc and there
are absolutely no scratches. So I don't think it's the disc. Furthermore,
this error happens for all my games. A lot of times when I'm watching a
movie or playing a game in XBox an error message comes up and says there's a
problem with the disc. So when I can actually get a game started I cannot
consistently play it because of this problem.
I called Microsoft about the problem and they stated that it would cost
approximately $80 to get it fixed (the warranty lapsed) and that I would have
to send it to them. I really did not have time to play alot of games with it
during the first year when it was still under warranty. Although I did have
these problems in the first year, I did not know that it was a significant
and chronic problem.
Anyway, I have several questions. I know alot of other users have had this
problem and I was wondering if anyone has some advice for me for this
problem. I have used a DVD lens cleaner and I have cleaned my discs. Does
this problem stem from a bad DVD drive? Is there anyway I could replace it
myself? I am terribly disappointed in MS because of my experience. I waited
for the XBox to come out and did not purchase a PS2 because I wanted to
support MS. I know I am asking this question well in advance, but does
anyone have some hardware concerns for XBox 360? Although I have had a bad
experience with the XBox if XBox 360 is backwards compatible I might purchase
it because I have a large library of XBox games that I would like to play.
Sorry for the long post.
