Fable and Project Gotham headed to Xbox 2 - Kim
Rob Fahey 10:01 04/04/2005
Microsoft preps its biggest Xbox franchises for its next-gen console
Several of the biggest Xbox franchises are already planned for Xbox 2,
according to Microsoft Game Studios boss Shane Kim, who has confirmed that
Fable, Halo and Project Gotham Racing are all en route to the next-gen
console.
Speaking in an interview on the official Xbox.com website, Kim said that he
was "very proud" of MGS' track record in terms of the creation of new
intellectual properties, and that these will provide Xbox with an "exclusive
competitive advantage" in the next generation.
"Without giving away all the surprises we have in store," he commented,
"gamers that love franchises like Halo, Fable, and Project Gotham Racing can
safely assume we will continue to invest in them as we move into the next
generation."
Kim didn't give any further details of the company's actual plans for any of
the franchises in question, but the new Halo and Fable games, at least, are
unlikely to appear until quite a while after launch - since developers
Bungie and Big Blue Box both only finished work on their last games late in
2004.
Speaking about Microsoft Game Studios' role in terms of Xbox, Kim said that
"we definitely have the talent and the willingness to create new
breakthrough intellectual property."
"I'm actually very proud of our track record here," he continued, "as we
have invested significant resources into creating new IP in this generation,
with titles like Fable, Jade Empire, and Forza Motorsport. There's a
collective vision at MGS about what we need to do to be creating truly
original material, and yes, it will be central to how we move into the next
generation."
Asked elsewhere in the interview whether Xbox had the potential to "unseat
Sony", Kim was bullish on the prospects for the platform. "Absolutely," he
responded. "Xbox has incredible momentum right now, and we are
well-positioned heading into the next generation of consoles.

Holy crap!!! Next thing you know there will be new GTA and Final Fantasy
games for the PS3! And... I mean this is almost too bizarre to imagine...
but maybe a new Mario game for the next Nintendo console!!!!!111

Well, given how Fable sort of flopped, it is somewhat surprising that
a sequel to it will be made.

I thought Fable sold over 600,000 copies in its first month?

LOL - Better announce it now, it might be ready in 2010 as Microsoft is
getting ready for the Xbox 3. :^)

Really? The price dropped on it so quickly, I thought it sold poorly.

I don't remember any quick price drop on Fable. Are you confusing it
with Beyond Good and Evil perhaps?

And have the stuff the first game was supposed to have?

they definitely overhyped it, yet I still had a blast playing through it (a
few times already). say what you will about missing content, Fable is still
a work of art.

| Agreed. This game seems to get a lot of grief, but I loved it. Looked
great. The art direction alone makes other games look lackluster. I
look forward to a sequel.

yeah, Fable had, arguably, the best production values of any game I've ever
seen. incredible look and feel...great, expansive, organic, natural,
immersive environments...nice variety and depth of main and side
quests...perfectly integrated minigames...superb voice acting and script,
and the sound effects and music just tied everything together for a magical
experience...I mean come on...even the user interface was perfectly thought
out, and how cool was it to dig up and upgrade a frying pan, buy shops, get
people drunk, have your wives buy you presents, steal weapons, go fishing,
etc? it was fukking awesome! it was so awesome I think I'm gonna play
through it again, just to beat the arena section without a scratch!

| Just to make it clear, Fable sold phenomenally opening week... But then
sales dropped dramatically. It's as low as $15 dollars *new* at many stores
where I live (and they aren't mispriced, I guarantee you).
The game was a disappointment for many, seeing as most were able to complete
it in 10 hours or less. At most, Fable has about a week of complete
engagement, but then, once you've completed all the quests and realize that,
despite how fun combat is, there really isn't any challenge to it, it really
becomes less of a gameplay experience and more of just looking at the pretty
graphics. It also didn't help that, despite the supposed Hero customization
possible, almost every hero ends up identical by the end (Bright/Dark Plate
Armor, Favorite Legendary Weapon, Bulging Muscles, Halo/Horns and your
choice of hairstyle).
Also, just to inform you all, there *is* a remake of Fable dated to come out
for the PC and Xbox with new content and a longer story. It's called Fable:
The Lost Chapters. Or, in other words, Fable: We Really Needed more
Production Time.
Regardless, despite the qualms I have over the first edition of Fable, I am
stoked about the release of the remake and the eventual sequel. Really, it
has potential, and the 9 hours it took me to complete the first one were
some of the best of any game I've ever played.
P.S. I know this reply is 2 weeks late, but it needed to be brought to
attention.

if you beat the game in 9 hours, you cheated yourself. I've played through
two full times, each took over 20 hours, and neither time have I been able
to get all of the legendary weapons or open all of the demon doors (ok,
maybe the second time I did, can't remember), collect all the keys, own all
the shops/homes, get 100% boast rating, collect all the dolls, etc, etc,
etc, etc...

The problem is you have to enjoy the game the 1st time to have much
interest in playing it again.
