| Hello, Ive got a HDTV, an Xbox, and the HD pack from
microsoft. My TV has a native res of 720p. My question is, what modes do I
enable in the MS dashboard? Do I
only enable the mode that matches my native res(720p), or enable all 3
modes. Someone told me to enable all three because it also depends on the
games. They said if
you have only 720p enabled and play a 1080i game it will
be sent out at standard 480. Im so confused on this, can anyone help?

| You should enable all three. Your TV should convert 1080i to 720p for you.
You can find out much more on this at http://www.hdtvarcade.com

| Thanks very much for the reply, so could an Xbox MVP or someone verify
that for me?

| I'm not an Xbox MVP, but when people tell you what works, it does. The
issue is whether your TV can do what you expect it to, and secondly, whether
the game you're playing supports what you think it does. Here's a pretty
complete list of Xbox games, and their capabilities:
http://www.hdtvarcade.com/xboxlist.htm What your TV is, and what modes it
is capable of only you can determine by looking at the manual or checking
the manufacturer's web site.
There are only about 30 Xbox games which do other resolutions than 480p, and
only about one-third of those will do 1080i.

| Ok I was just thinking if all 3 modes were enabled, but say..for the
sake of argument that my set did not accept a 720p signal via component,
it would not do any good to have that mode enabled in the dash, right?
Mine does take 720p through component, but I know some RP-CRT's did not
accept a 720p signal via component.

How abut someone that has written a lot about HD and the XBox, and even
maintains a website that is dedicated to HD gaming?
Oh, wait, they just did the post before yours...
But I do believe Ollie was referring to the usual way of handling the setup.
There will be exceptions, of course. Still, by following that advice you
will get the best possible picture IF it is supported by the TVs. If it
will not display then you will be the first to know...

That is correct. By him stating his set had a native res of 720p it is most
likely he has a DLP or LCD set. That is why I said it should be okay to
enable all 3 modes. This is not the case for other types of sets that can
not accept certain signals.

| Thanks everyone for your help. I was not trying to offend anyone by the
question I asked, its just that I have asked this question in other
forums and alot of people seem to disagree in the subject. And theres no
solid documentation that I can find online anywhere. But now I know.
BTW, which one of you guys that replied has the HDTVarcade website?
Because I have another question.
