EA Obtains Exclusive NFL Licensing Rights
|
|

| There's already a thread on slashdot about this; basically EA bought the
exclusive rights to use NFL player names, teams, stadiums, etc. This
looks to be a huge blow to their competitors (namely the superior &
cheaper ESPN series). I already disliked EA for not supporting the
Dreamcast or Live! (initially). I really can't stand this company now,
the last thing we need is more monopolies.
| |
|
| so what does this mean for other companies. are they not allowed to create
games that use real team names and logos, players? or are they just not
allowed to use the official nfl logo?

| I am not really sure either...but I will tell you that if I cant have my
ESPN NFL 2K6...I will be one pissed off person! 2K5 is WAY better than
Madden, and I think that EA knows that and so they dropped a butt load of
money so ESPN or anyone else for that matter cant compete...what a bunch of
jerk offs!!

| Exclusive right to use something means that, legally, no one else is
entitled to make any use of that knowledge (e.g. specific proprietory
technology) or property (e.g. team names or logos) under any circumstance
covered by the exclusive-use agreement until the end of the exclusive-use
agreement. Sounds complicated but it's not really...
In this case, no on else but EA can use ANYTHING related to the NFL in a
football video game (player names, jersey, stadiums, team names, team
logos, NFL logos, etc.). This will basically cause the shutdown of any
other NFL game except EA's as it's now illegal for ESPN and others to make
and sell them.
There are apparently a few loopholes (such as mobile phone games or
internet games), but basically EA has got most of the market locked up for
the next five years. On top of that, they have a 100% guarantee that they
will have no competitiors in any of the areas in which they develop NFL
based products. This will in effect give them 100% of the market, or if
you prefer a monopoly.

| That is just wrong.
I guess we will be seeing a new price point for football games of around $60
or more.

One other thing we don't need is any more glitch infested EA games - their
quality has been horrendous recently...many, many game ending glitches
popping up in EA games - especially their Sims stuff.

Actually it's probably a good business move but unfortunately their recent
games have had tons of glitches and Madden is no exception.

Now if Sony goes and gets an exclusive with EA for Madden....
Doubtful, but at least fuel for thought.

I hope everyone stays away from Madden because of this. I will play a cheap
ESPN with chessy team names like the Denver Donkies and fake player names
like Mayton Panning. I always prefferd Sega Sports (ESPN) over EA Sports and
it sucks that there will not be a ESPN NFL game.

| I totally agree,
Nothing stifles creativity and innovation like no competition.
I would love to take the Pew England Natriots led by Bom Trady to the
BuperSowl...

But presumably wouldn't stop ESPN or anyone else making a College
Football or CFL game though...

| This SUCKS bigtime. I HATE the cartoony Madden player models. And the AI
doesn't compare to ESPN. This kills all the competition in favor of an
inferior product.

Not pickett signs, but with dollar signs. Simply do not buy EA's NFL game
if you think this is wrong.

Protests are gay, just don't buy the game and encourage friends not to buy
it. This can hurt Madden fans also because EA has no reason to put out a
superior game when there is no competition.
