Our X-box, bought in the US, won't run games sold here in New Zealand. Can
we change the region setting?

No.
The region setting is hardcoded to the system.
It cannot be changed without unauthorised hardware modifications that void
your warrantee and would prevent you playing (those games) on Live etc.

While we're on that topic, Mike, can you provide a list of region-free
games? The Street Fighter Anniversary Collection released in Japan is one
example of an Xbox game that will run on any Xbox, regardless of its
region code. Knowing what games aren't subject to the region lock
restriction would help users like Richard.

That is completely false information.

In reality what you need is to "mod" your Xbox to bypass the region
lock, and modding can be done in software ("soft mod"), so that you do
not have to make any hardware modifications at all.

Modding your Xbox does not prevent you playing on Xbox Live either.

For more truths instead of Microsoft propaganda, please see for example
http://www.xbox-scene.com/ and several other similar sites (Google is
your friend). Here's a direct link to a "Softmodding for Absolute

Any mod is considered unauthorized, and therefore Mike is entirely correct.
As for it being Microsoft propoganda, woudl you rather the company NOT
follow on their policy?

Replacement of any of our system code on an Xbox be that via software or
hardware is an unauthorised modification.
And if detected your Xbox will be barred and this will be prevent you from
playing on Live.

Now you are twisting your own words - you conveniently 'forgot' that you
claimed that hardware modifications were required. And when it comes
to the modification being "unauthorised" it may be unauthorised in a
similar manner than using for example Firefox instead of Internet
Explorer is "unauthorised by Microsoft", but still perfectly OK - and in
fact a very sensible thing to do.

Using a modded Xbox without Xbox Live detecting it is a trivial task - I
have a modded box and use it on Live without any problems.

Play Halo 2 online yet? Have you modded the actual Hardware, ie added a
bigger drive or just chipped it?

I am still using the original hard drive - although it would be possible
to add another, larger drive to complement the original drive and still
be using the original for Live.
