Truly, this is the stupidest name for a console since TurboGrafx-16. I
really hope they're not dumb enough to actually go with this.

IGN totally called it on this one. Xbox 2 sounds "lesser" than PlayStation
3? Jesus. Why don't they just arbitrarily skip a few numbers and call it
Xbox 4 then? Or Xbox 1337? "Get it? It's LEET! All the kids will love it!"
Morons.

Hey, I always thought TurboGrafx-16 sounded way cooler than Genesis and
"Super" Nintendo, but back then I had a mullet - so what the hell.
How do you guys feel about the number game though? I mean really. Most
people that aren't really in the "know" about videogames are always
going to call the Playstation a Playstation and the Xbox an Xbox, no
matter what number is currently supposed to follow behind it. I would
welcome something else to distinguish one generation from the next. As
long as I don't have to see 'uber' on a console box I'd be fine with
about anything besides a number.

Actually, I don't think that's very far-fetched.

XBox Next would be fitting with current game nomenclature theory
("kids are getting tired of endless sequels... so we'll start adding
subtitles and dropping the numerical designators!")

Anyways, I've been banging the "Nintendo 65" drum for years now,
not that I thought it up, and I see no reason to stop now. "XBox 65"
would also be fine.

Yeah, but as soon as the console was released, the name would be
completely meaningless. It wouldn't be the next console - it'd be the
current console. Unless, of course, it's even bigger and heavier than
the current xbox in which there's a solid case for using its immense
gravitational field to power a quantum shift which would temporally
superposition it.

Or something.

I'm sure lots of people would *love* to play with Mary-Kate & Ashley's
box...

Yes, that was tasteless, but I just couldn't let that opening slide by.

XBox 1080 sounds sort of cool, but also reminds me of the Atari 7800 and
we all know how well that console did.

How is this different from the rest of the XBox lineup? Not one original
title in the bunch. Everything's a sequel. Another DOA, another
DOA:Volleyball, another Halo, etc. Not that sequels are a bad thing -
after all, if you've got an established franchise, it's easier to sell
sequels/spin-offs. Look at Nintendo, for example. But every so often I'd
like something...different... Not a sequel.

First, this IS Microsoft we're talking about here. They were afraid of
releasing Windows 4.0 when MacOS was at ver. or 8. When Microsoft missed
their original shipdate, they named it Win95 (as a joke, at first), thus
starting that whole stupid trend of naming your product after the year.

So if they want to be "bigger" than PS3, they should call it Xbox'05. Or
if they want to give a yell out to the Japanese market, call it Xbox
Rooster, or something like that, since this is the lunar year of the
chicken/rooster.

You'd be surprised... Can't tell you how many people would talk about the
Nintendo Playstation, or the Sony Xbox, for instance. If the average
consumer can't even get the name straight, how do you expect to get the
numbers straight? And how do you explain to someone that xbox1 is better
than ps2 when 2>1? No, seriously, I've seen products tack on a number so
that they appear "better" than their competitor who has a smaller number
in their name. Yes, it's stupid.

And since console generations last four-six years, there's no way

Yeah, well, one could point out that Win9x was pretty much a joke
anyways. After all, it only took Microsoft a decade to do what MacOS did
back in 1984. ;)

Well, they could tweak the number 5. XboxV? Five is "quinque" in latin,
not that I know how to pronounce it, but you could tweak it, I'm sure.
Quin sounds sort of like Quan, so Xbox Quantum? Xbox Quantum V?

If XBox will be on the market for 5 years, how about "Xbox Bi-Decadium"?

Just avoid French. 5 = cinq (sounds like "sink") so "Xbox Sink" doesn't
sound good. Although in (Mandarin) Chinese, 5 = "wu" (sounds like ooh!
or Wu from Wu tang clan) so then you'd get "Xbox Wu!" Or "WuBox!"

Or, just a blatant attempt to appeal to the Japanese market: Go Xbox Go
Go Go! ("go" = five in Japanese, The Mach 5 was a sort of bilingual pun
in Japanese) Or, going with the Speed Racer theme, "Console X", the
mysterious console with a secret background... ;)

Maybe there's a reason I never went into marketing...

You mean ":CueCat" wasn't? Noting as I will that there has already been
one well-noted branding exercise involving a made-up symbol with no
pronounciation, I think I'm already prepared for a l33t naming project.

Can't believe they resisted "XBox xp",

You mean Brøderbund.

The Ø character is Scandinavian in origin, not German.
It is the Ö character which has umlauts and is German.

I think they should just call it neXtBox, it sounds like XBox but is
sufficiently creative to be easy to say and market. XBox 360 doesn't
roll of the tounge well, Playstation 3 does, as Does Game Cube or

Nextbox would be logical, but Microsoft would have to purchase the rights
to the name as it was used by (now defunct) Next Computers. That would be
