I can't find them ANYWHERE. They're completely sold out at Wal-Mart,
Circuit City, Best Buy, Game Stop, KB Toys, Fry's Electronics -- you
name it. What's going on? Is this common?

Yes, this is common. Typical after Christmas.
This seems to happen every year, you would think that stores would make sure
to get their hands on plenty so as to not turn customers away.

Sadly, my XBox pretty much died altogether last month. Been looking to get a
new one, but they're just not to be had. Well, not without insane markups. I
stumbled across the occasional stray at Target and such, but they were
returns and had been stripped of controller and games. Most stores been
telling me will still be 6-8 weeks before they think they will get any more.

I found that this was the case just before Christmas, but afterwards I
found the consoles plentiful and cheap. I ended up buying a couple for the
purpose of repairing existing models with busted hard drives or DVD
drives. Why not buy just the components? Because individually the parts
are more expensive. And now I have all sorts of left over components to
scavenge, and my friends all go home with their save files intact.

Is this different regionally? Here in the backward town known as
Jacksonville, Florida, all the consoles are restocked at the usual places.
The specialty shops got them first (EB, Gamestop, etc) but the regular
retailers all have them here as well.

They're cheap, all right (most stores are pricing them at around
$149), but *nobody* has them in stock.

Must be a regional thing. I'm in Phoenix, and I can't find one
anywhere. Can find PS2s and GameCubes, though.

Could be regional. I'm outside of Denver, they're priced cheap (about $149)
at the standard haunts, but no one seems to have a complete one, well not
that i've found so far. Local EB Games does have some new ones. $320!!! They
have a backorder list for $149 ones but they are refurb, and they don't have
any of those. Yup, plenty of PS2 and GameCubes.

From what some retailers are telling me, apparently MS began
witholding XBoxes in October to artifically increase demand since the
new, slimmer PS2 came out.

Funny thing is, they may be shooting themselves in the foot. There
are plenty of PS2s and GameCubes on the shelves, and those wanting a
some type of gaming system may opt for one of those instead of waiting
who know how long. What's worse, MS will find it hard to sell the
XBox system when XBox2 comes out.

All I can say is "Thank God for EBay."

The reason is that Microsoft has cleaned out it reserves over christmas and
is making more xboxes at the moment and there not shipping very many beacuse
they dont have any to ship.

As of today...

Local (Phoenix): Wal-Mart, CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City, EB Games,
GameStop, Fry's Electronics, ToysRUs, Babbages -- all out of stock

Online:

Wal-Mart has some bundles in stock
CompUSA has local pick-up only with none available in my area
Best Buy has all bundles sold out
Circuit City is sold out
EB Games has some bundles in stock
GameStop seems to have some in stock
Fry's Electronics (Outpost.com) says "call for availability"
ToysRUs says "currently not available" for all console bundles

"In stock" is questionable, though; some systems are not "live". A
sales associate at Best Buy told me about MS witholding Xboxes to
artificially increase demand.

I finally made my purchase with Wal-Mart online this afternoon. I'll
let you know if it was truly "in stock", as the system reported.

Okay, I was really expecting perhaps a store manager to give you the
information or at least someone at the managerial level where it could be
verified.

As of February 2nd, 2004, the Xbox is SOLD OUT at all BestBuys in the
50 mile radius I'm willing to travel to get one. That's at least 5
stores in New York State, near NYC. One employee told me that Microsoft
has decreased production and that there are only 900 Xbox consoles
across ALL BestBuy stores across the United States and that includes
display units! What the hell is going on here? I have a $100 BB Gift
Card I have to sit on. So much for Microsoft winning the console war
with idiocy like this!

Don't know anything about Microsoft supposedly decreasing production. Sounds
wonky.
As far as Best Buy...
I spoke with a family member who works for Best Buy, in a position where she
should know the scoop. This is the story I got.
Supposedly Best Buy just plain screwed up. They didn't order the XBox's they
were supposed to. Some store managers noticed the error before it was too
late and were able to order more in time. This is why some stores still have
some. However, most managers did not discover the issue in time if at all,
and it was too late to get their hands on any more. However, this did not
stop them from taking orders.
Best Buy in general is getting their share of XBox's, but they are being
diverted to fulfill previous orders. And of course, many have still been
taking orders, thereby extending the general backlog. It will still be some
time before overall supply increases enough to fulfill the backlog and
restock shelves.

Even I couldn't get a firm date on availability. Seems that she doesn't know
exactly how many they will get each week until they actually get them
because other stores and people pull rank and get some diverted. If her
store gets all the ones they are entitled to each week, it will still be 4
weeks before their pre-Christmas backlog is fulfilled.

Take it as you will. Seems to be the most credible story I've heard yet,
from someone that should actually know. Not to say they wouldn't have a
shortage anyway, but possibly it wouldn't be quite so widespread.

I broke down and did the unthinkable, ordered one online from Wal-Mart a few
days ago. It just arrived, 2 days ahead of the minimum projected delivery
date.

I know Target and many other retailers are getting them, they just sell out
immediately. If you are persistent, they can be found. Call your retailers
every day to see if they got one or are getting one that day. Be prepared to
go pick it up immediately. Or, order online and resolve yourself to the fact
that you will get it when you get it. Then use your BB Gift Card for a
couple games.

I just ordered one from Circuit City online, they seem to have them now
even though all the local Circuit City stores are also sold out. Nice
theory about BB, but then why does CC also have problems? I think the
problem is that the hardware is getting so old, that MS is actually
having trouble finding the parts! Plus, is Intel going to want to sell
MS new CPUs now that Xbox Next will not use an Intel CPU? Is Nvidia
going to want to sell MS new Geforce chips now that MS announced ATI in
Xbox Next and Nvidia is dealing with Sony on PS3? And finding new 8 or
10GB hard drives is probably a bit difficult now too. Sure, they
probably have legally binding contracts with these companies, but that
doesn't mean Intel or Nvidia aren't giving MS hell with the parts. If
so, a new Xbox could become even more impossible to find than it is
today. I just hope I get mine. :|
