Question on replacing not modding
|
|
|
| Xbox is not reading my newer games. Get the green box almost every time
saying it does not recognize disk. My question is can you replace the drive
or does it have to be microsoft brand. Any direction you can point me in is
appreciated..

| unfortunately, he's right. You're looking at a new DVD-Drive for your
box, and I personally would be too scared to buy one off the net.
Better off with the new XB.

Does not have to be an Xbox DVD drive. Here's a tutorial on how to
install a standard PC DVD drive into an Xbox:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/dvddrive.php
Using this method you can have two drives connected to your box, the
Xbox original and a standard PC drive.
If you don't want two drives, it's a very easy and painless operation to
replace to old Xbox drive with a new one. This does not require modding
or tinkering, just opening the Xbox and replacing the old drive with the
new. There are plenty of cheap new Xbox DVD drives around for example in
eBay. Go for Samsung, they are of the best quality.
It would be complete waste to buy a new console if one component breaks
down. You don't do that for your PC or car, do you?

That would depend on the mechanic, xbox or car. Now, add in the slim price
margin between a new xbox - cost of 2 free games currently and another
drive (plus shipping), and it is going to be a tough call. If you need to
hire someone to replace the drive then it rapidly approaches BER levels.
It comes down to how cheap you can get the drive and if the work can be
done for free.
Great link, thanks.

| The big question is why are they failing so quickly? Most of my games have
problems and my xbox (which is not used alot) already has problems reading
my old and new games. I'm so sick of seeing that box pop up about bad disk.
My dvd burner gets more use and its been going strong longer than my xbox.
I don't care if xbox is better I'm replacing with Playstation.
