An Open Letter To Blig Merk

| I'm really confused as to your hostility toward the Microsoft XBOX 360 or
any commercial retail product for that matter. You've wasted countless hours
rallying against something that in all respects has nothing to do with you.
Why do YOU think that you compulsively search the internet for information
on this subject in an effort to gather support for your argument? This is
not normal behavior for anyone your age (I'm assuming your age based on your
posts. I would actually be more concerned if you were a child.) If a person
is disinterested in a retail item then the obvious choice as a consumer
would be to refrain from purchasing that item. You choose to write endless
anonymous hate-filled newsgroup posts that show complete disdain for anyone
opposing your viewpoint. I'm sure that most people would agree that you find
some kind of thrill being the instigator. But this behavior just screams
"pay attention to me" or "I KNOW that I'm right". Is it unfair to guess that
you feel inadequately appreciated in your life? Do you find yourself
constantly thinking about what you wrote in your latest post? Is it
difficult being away from the computer knowing that someone out there may
have actually responded to your rants?
I'm willing to bet that the XBOX 360 has nothing to do with your desire to
be noticed. I'm fairly sure that as long as people responded to your
outbursts then you could simply substitute the XBOX 36O for any other
consumer electronics device. The XBOX 360 just happens to be the current hot
retail item at the moment and conveniently provides you with the most
consideration. I've considered the fact that many gamers are loyal to their
favorite system and feel the need to belittle those who chose an opposing
game machine. Again, this immature behavior is all about "being right" and
accepted as so. This type of person's desire to be with the majority or "In
Crowd" actually influences their consumer choices. They build up such an
irrational fear of being unaccepted that they begin to feel that something
as arbitrary as their preference for a specific game machine will inevitably
rob them of that acceptance. Their difficulty in accepting the fact that
they may have made the "wrong choice" compels them to support their decision
with endless arguments. But who are these people trying to convince other
than themselves? Insecurity, immaturity and loneliness dictate this type of
behavior.
Your rationalizations only further weaken the consumer position. Competition
among manufacturers benefits everyone from designers, manufacturers and
especially the consumer. I suppose a monopoly would support your line of
thinking in that it would limit the decision making process to only one
"correct" choice".
I have to ask, "If someone gave you an XBOX 360 would you actually hold fast
to your diatribe and refuse the gift?"
I suppose I'm just as guilty as anyone by feeding into your desperate
neurosis. I do feel that in order to help this person we as an online
community need to stop responding to his posts. Perhaps then he will attain
the attention he truly desires from the appropriate individuals.
Blig Merk, I know that you've read this post (You can't help yourself) and I
really don't expect any sincere response but I would appreciate one. I'm not
trying to start an argument with you.
I actually feel bad for you.
Also...What will happen if the PS3 turns out to be less powerful, popular
and functional than the XBOX 360? Just wondering..

I'm sure you are really going to make Blig Merk "see the light" with
your insightful post.
But seriously, he was right the whole time.
Xbox was/is a failure, about 4-5 Billion Dollars worth.
Xbox360 is also turning into a failure.
PS2 IS the best console to a gamer as it IS the console with the
largest library of games, over 14,000 if you count imports and PS1
titles.
You just can't argue with those facts.
100 million happy customers can't be wrong.
M$ needs to stick with software, that's what they are good at.

| 100 million customers minus however many had to buy a 2nd or 3rd PS2
because their original units kept crapping out on them. I know
Microsoft has had DVD issues as well (Thomson), but only the PS2 was
the target of a class action lawsuit (along with Sony's DVD players
and... gasp... dare I say it? WEGA televisions...)
The thing that trolls can't grasp is success isn't measured in mere
dollars or installed units. The quality of the games has to be taken
into account and in that regard the Xbox is a success.
The PS2 has 1072 games in release right now according to
http://www.tothegame.com but on average close to half of them suck
(based on percentages at GameRankings and Metacritic.) Of the games
that don't suck how many are currently on retailers shelves? The top
50? 100? Maybe? The total number of games released is irrelevant if
they aren't being stocked by retailers.
"100 million customers can't be wrong"? McDonalds has sold 100 billion
hamburgers as of 1995 (yes, I had to look it up -
http://www.mcdonalds.co.nz/history_global_timeline.htm ). Does that
mean they make "better" hamburgers than Burger King? Or Wendy's or
(insert name of your favorite bar or restaurant here.)
No, it means they sold more. That's it.

Good thing it's a free internet, and we all have a right to an opinion.
Won't go into my opinion, as it matters naught in the scheme of things. But
trolling and opinions are two very, very different things, now aren't they.
