Restricted Content Update 'fix' is broken on Xbox Extender for Media Center
|
|
| CJSnet 2005-10-09, 7:34 pm |
| Hi, very unhappy today. Apparently an Automatic Update for XP has broken
the Xbox Media Center Extender's ability to show Restricted/Protected
Content.
See these two threads for many other people with the same issue since last
month:

http://tinyurl.com/b4blf
What does MS know about this and what is being done to resolve it?
Urgent reply appreciated.

CJSnet,
As you are in the UK where there is no Restricted/Protected content I fail to
see how this affects you or why you are unhappy.

Hi Nigel, I'm not making it up.
Telewest's new 'Teleport' on-demand movies are copy protected.

Thanks.

Are you sure that this is an issue for MCE (or rather MCX) in th UK? Telewest's
on-demand movies may be copy-protected but it will be in the same way that Sky
Movies are i.e. with Macrovision. AFAIK The Broadcast Flag is a US only thing.

Hi Nigel, all I can tell you is that I can view the on-demand movies from my
MCE machine and Linksys MCX, but not MCXbox. Update 1 released earlier in
the year fixed this for many people. If you read the above two threads, you
will see that a MS Auto Update has broken it, for many. I am merely
included and looking for a response from Microsoft.
Thanks anyway.

Hmm, but *HOW*? The only "copyright bit" available in PAL systems I'm aware
of is one of the WSS (Wide Screen Signalling) bits, and I don't think MCE
respects that.
So how would Teleport's copy protection work if there is no way the
protection could be signalled to the MCE machine...?
Regards,«

Well not to worry, a reinstall later and the MCXbox is now playing the
content correctly.
I guess it was just flakiness in the code causing a required reinstallation
of Update 1 for Xbox.

| Hi CJSnet,
I have the Linksys extender and experienced the same problem even after
Update 1. I updated my video card and TV tuner card drivers and it fixed
the problem. I am pretty sure that it was the TV tuner card drivers that
did the trick. I have an ATI Radeon 9800 video card and a Hauppauge WinTV
500MCE TV tuner card.
