The most significant innovation happens in Direct3D. Direct3D is
permanently disadvantaged compared to OpenGL because it lacks an
extension system (In OpenGL, if the driver exposes it, you can use
it). That is why a D3D developer has to wait for a new release to use
a new feature.
I believe Microsoft will not delay release and risk developers
drifting to OpenGL. They still aim to convert their Microsoft standard
to an industry standard.
