Hearing disgruntled as well as very positive messages about this.

Got Halo:CE (or, the frist one, if thats not the right jargon) way back when
I bought the X box and loved it. I've of course been warned off buying Halo2
by family members keen to buy it as a christmas gift. So, eager
anticipation...

So, any comments on what to expect when the disc goes in the machine on
25th?

Jsut interested in opinions - not tyring to re-start a rant / troll or
anything

cheers

Ok, ok - but with threads entitled "Halo 2 so bad it causes cancer" (or
whatever) I was hoping for a more balanced view in this more general group.

Never mind - not long now.

One thing has kept me from buying Halo 2 - all the reports of display issues
on HiDef screens when in 480P mode...apparently the game was tested on a
screen with no oversampling so if your set has any, there is a good chance
you will have some of the screen cutoff including health and ammo info. My
screen in particular was noted as one that had major issue both in 480P and
480I on a couple bulliten boards.

I am also not a huge fan of the genre so I will wait and concentrate on some
of my other games for now...I'm having a lot of fun with DOAU and MKD.

Essentially more of the same but with higher jumping and two guns at the
same time.

Halo2 is a good game for single player, but a great game for multi-player.
Get it if you have live or are a FPS fan. If you are not a fan of FPS or the
original then it may disappoint. It will have fans - like the second Matrix
film - but like that I suspect that it may eventually become thought of as
the weakest of the trilogy (when Halo 3 comes out).

So overall - if you like FPS, the original, or have live then get it. If you
don't have live then get that and then Halo 2.

The main thing I would keep in mind is that it feels like a totally
different game. You're not getting Halo 1 with new features. You're
getting a new game with familiar characters and weapons.

Along these lines, I would suggest throwing out most of your tactics from
the original game and be sure to experiment - especially with the weapons.
I don't think there's a single weapon in the game that behaves the same as
its counterpart in H1.

A lot of the people that are disappointed seem to fall into two categories:
1) People who saw every demo, followed every news release, and are upset
that several touted features/plot points were no longer in the game.
2) People who were really good at multiplayer in H1 are frustrated at the
gameplay in H2 on XBL. Complaints I have heard range from being able to
grab the flag through walls/floors, cheating via router standby mode and the
way the spawn system works on XBL. I don't have Live but it sounds like
several multiplayer levels respawn you in bad places with the worst possible
weapon choice.

Everything said, I think it's a pretty good game. I have played through the
campaign several times co-op with my wife and I enjoy it more as time goes
on. The main differences I notice are:
1) Closer to a squad-based game in that you really pay attention to your
comrades on the battlefield and what they're doing.
2) A lot more interaction with the environment. Things that were solid
obstacles and nice to hide behind in H1 tend to blow up or move in H2.
Especially the big purple covenant boxes. I've been killed by having a
hunter punch one of those, send it flying across the map, and have it hit
me.
3) There's something different about the first-person view. I can't quite
describe it, but it feels to me like I don't have the right perscription in
my glasses. I think the view is squished sideways or something to that
effect. You don't seem to be able to see as much.
4) The chief has gone limp-wrist and can't throw grenades very far. Aiming
grenades takes practice again. It's really hard to throw grenades long
distance because you have to aim so high that you can't see your target.

These were supposedly fixed with a mandatory update via XBL. Since I don't
have Live or a HiDef screen, I can't comment on it, but I think most of the
grumbling has gone away on this.

Thanks - thats great.

A couple of notes on Halo 2 & XBox in general.

I used to be a computer only gamer, then I got really tired of paying good
money to have to upgrade a video card, more memory, larger hard drive,
etc... for a new game. I have played the original Halo on PC and enjoyed it
fairly well.

Halo 2 - After purchasing an XBox 2 weeks ago, this is the first game I
purchased. I am enjoying it immensley. I am using a standard 27 inch color
TV, and have the sound fed through my stereo. The quality of the imagery is
excellent, and I have not found any glitches. The game play is very well
done, with an extreme variety of weapons to make use of. In fact, I will
say that I think I find the gameplay superior to the original Halo on PC.

Hope this helps with your decision making,

Fred.

Very cool - time for me to think about grabbing a used copy.
