Would it be possible for me to install PC hard disk in an X-box? They're
both IDE drives aren't they?

Right now the drive in my X-box seems to be DOA but I'm hopping to revive it
long enough to ghost it. I can get a pretty good IDE drive for under $50
and it shouldn't be all that hard to install it.

I'd sure like to hear back from anybody that has done this or any links to
sites with info to do the same.

Yes you can, but it may not work as an Xbox... or it might not work at
all... you would need to get the Xbox software, which I believe is illegal
to do as it violates a law or two and probably the EULA also. I am sure
someone else will reply with more specifics on why you can't/shouldn't do
it. but with your old HD completely dead you are mostly SOL unless you have
another Xbox already.

First off, your XBox will have to be modded in order for it to work (and
for the extra space to be of any value). Furthermore, I think (not
sure) that you may need a working HDD to copy some critical files off of
first. On a plus side, you can take out the working HDD from an
unmodded XBox, copy the files, and put it back in the unmodded system
without any problems. For much more info check out www.xbox-scene.com.

Thanx. I checked it out and the conversion sure looks complicated. How
much trouble is it to install a mod chip?

@trnddc05:

Depends on your Xbox version. I have a 1.4 and installed my chip in under
30 minutes (it was a solderless xchip). If you have a 1.6 it is a little
more tricky...
go to
www.xbox-scene.com/versions_1.php to get your version

If his HDD has already failed, I'd presume it's a 1.0 or 1.1 which is a
fairly simple procedure to do soderlessly (and really not that tough to
sodder -- only one hard part d0). If it's under a year old, I believe
MS will cover it under warranty (assuming you haven't cracked it open
yet).

It's more than a year old and I haven't opened it yet. The problem as I see
it is if the drive is toast and I cannot ghost it, then the only good option
is to send it back to MS for repair.
