What features would make the PS2 a perfect console?
|
|
|
| What features should be added to the PS2 to make it a perfect console? In
other words, what would Sony need to add to the PS2 so you purchase it over
the XBox?
Thanks for any info.

It would need to be 1) developer friendly 2) more powerful 3) online service
like Live only better 4) decent games. I can go on.
In other words it doesn't stand a chance, I sold my PS2 years ago now glad I
did, totally regret buying it, waste of money.

| It would need to be a xbox with Halo 2 and KOTOR 2: The Sith Lords. PS2 does
have San Andreas but the gaming magazines are saying it only has it for 3 to
6 months.

| PS2 just sucks:
1. You have to spend heaps of money to buy the stupid poor amount of
the memory, say: only 4M or 8M, XBox has Gigs!! The PS2 dudes could be
very proud of themselves and spend the stupid money if PS2 adds in
another "new" peripheral which has been already included as standard
component in XBox. This kind of PS2 trick can be only used to fool
around kids indeed.
2. XBox out beats PS2 in graphics processing
3. I don't quite like Japanese games simply because they are all damn
hard to play -- you will probably end up with broken fingers after the
game. The story lines are also worse off than the XBox games.
In summary:
So I would say PS2 is normally for kids (especially the silly Game
Cube) to grow up.
XBox is for adult and matured gamers, you are normally serious gamers
or I.T. professionals when you get in an XBox.

| Nothing.....PS2 is an inferior system, my friend bought three of them at the
rate of one per year because they kept breaking down.

That has more to do with proper care and use of the unit. It will break down
quickly if you use it to play DVD movies though... The PS2 is inferior in
that it has less power but that is not a major issue if the games are good.
I have not found any game I have to have for PS2 so I have not bought one
yet. Right now my Xbox is getting the majority of my playing time because of
the games I'm playing but I am equally fond of my Cube. I personally don't
care much for FPS or war games which means there are very few games for Xbox
that I am interested in but there are some - Fable was very enjoyable, as
was PG2 and I am currently playing Legacy of Kain ( now that the price has
dropped...). Early on there were many more Xbox games that I was interested
in than now - recent releases have been mostly games I have no interest in.
It's pretty simple :
Platformers and Japanese style RPGs - PS2
Adventure / limited RPG and - 'Zelda style games' - Gamecube
War Games, FPS, Racing and a few 'American style' RPGs - Xbox
You have to decide on the games you want to play first, then pick the
hardware...with multi-platform - Xbox generally wins unless you want to use
Action Replay since there is no real Action Replay for Xbox...only a bunch
of game saves which are worthless.

I got the PS2 in November 2001. Got the Xbox on launch day 14th March 2002
when it came out over here, PS2 was just getting dusty after that.
When I look back to see any games I missed over the last 2 and a half
years....... There's not a single PS2 game that interests me, that shows
how poor the PS2 really is.

| Thanks for all your input.
I've always been interested in the XBox more than the PS2 because I've
always mentally considered the XBox more powerful than the PS2, and that's
the main reason I purchased one. I'm a 27-yr old software engineer so maybe
that could be another reason. Another friend of mine (also an engineer) also
purchased an Xbox and also thinks the PS2 sucks. another reason would be
that I'm into into great graphics and not the fact that I can play RPG
games.
The reason I posted this question is because I'm writing a paper that will
include some future "hypothetical" projects that would improve the upcoming
PS3. And I'm trying to relate these projects so they take advantage of the
"Cell" chip (the chip that'll be running the PS3). I don't know if you guys
are familiar with it, but the "Cell" is a project that IBM, Toshiba, and
Sony are working on to use in servers, phones, etc... and, from what I've
heard, will be incredibly powerful (100 times more powerful than a 2.5GHz
Pentium 4).
So I was wondering what other projects within the PS3 could all this power
be used in. Even exxagerated projects are welcome.
Thanks for the info.

LOL. They've got a good hype machine but let's be clear, it's BS it was BS
with the PS1, it was BS with the PS2 (whatever happened to the 66GB/s of
memory bandwidth?), it's just "Cell" this time around instead of "Emotion
Engine".

Well, you are either trolling or extremely confused.
Even a simple person like myself understands that the infrastructure
required to support true cell computing of the magnitude you suggest does
not exist in this country now, nor will when the PS3 is an outdated toy (as
compared to a new toy in 2006). And to even suggest that cell chips inside
of telephones will be able to contribute to some cell processing over
current and near future cell phone data speeds is quite comical, indeed.
About the best advice I can give you for a project for the PS3 is to run PS3
software, no more, no less. It is too specialized hardware for any other
serious use, regardless of how deep you shovel it. Even Linux ports will
probably suffer this time around due to the hardware configuration (although
no doubt some will make it work as well as expected on a gaming console).
But thanks for the chuckles just the same. And spare us the hype - after
all, the truckload of PS2s to foreign countries to crack CIA codes has yet
to be topped in the naive urban legend category for the gullible.
