| Yes.
Swearing is just words. Be more concerned about violence than things like
swearing and/or nudity.

| Ok, that too, you're right.
Although the *type* of nudity I've seen is so degrading to women that I'd
rank it right up there with violence.

| Do you allow DVDs with swearing? What about the music your son listens to?

Of course you are being resonable.
It is responsible parenting to look at the ratings of the games you allow
your child to play as you would look at the rating of a movie/DVD they may
watch or the parental advisory sticker on music CDs.
The ratings on these media are there to help you make an informed decision
as to what is suitable for you or your child's consumption.

Of course not. But IMHO you should follow through to include other types of
entertainment as well, otherwise it could appear to the child that you are
against video games in particular.
A noble cause, but could be difficult to manage. I wish you luck.

| Mike,
That is a good reply to a concerned father. I think you are right.

Hi Don. No.

| Then you are being totally consistant.
I used to carefully monitor the games and movies my children watched (though
now I'm divorced so don't have such a say). And think that it is important
to do what you are doing. Some games are for grown ups and some are for
kids. I play through every game I ahve and there are some that they don't
get to play. As there are some movies they don't get to watch.
Good on you for being a sensible parent.

If you enjoy the games and movies that you won't let them watch, then you
are being a hypocrite and are teaching them nothing.
Parent by example.

Whoa there... Simply put, some things adults do are not for children...
Their turn for decision comes later, but the example shown is exactly that -
some things are for adults, not children, and will probably pass it on in
turn.

I'm sorry if I'm being a little harsh, but this kind of thing really
gets under my skin. If you tell your kids they can't smoke because
they're kids, as you light up a cigarette, then you will raise smokers.
It's as simple as that.
If you tell them they can't see nudity or violence because they're too
young, but enjoy it yourself, then you're sending them a mixed message.
Ask yourself what you really want to teach them. If you want them to
believe that gratuitous nudity degrades women and violence is immoral
then you had better convince yourself first.
If you want them to handle gratuitous nudity and violence with a certain
level of maturity and understanding, then you need to approach it with
them and be honest in how you yourself view it. Don't expect hiding it
from them to accomplish anything.

While I do agree with you on a lot of points (for example, I don't drink,
and attribute that directly to my parents not drinking), there are quite a
few examples that I can think of that is not so simple. For example, I
think that some CSI graphics are a bit much for young children, although the
show is perfectly fine for adults.

But it's *fake* violence. The nudity (in movies) and swearing are real. I
agree that real violence (snuff films) is unacceptable in movies/games.

I agree. You shouldn't be driving a car, either, unless you want your 5
year old doing the same.
