I have reached the conclusion that I need to replace the DVD drive on my
Xbox. Can someone recommend a good vendor? Will all Xboxes use any Xbox
DVD drive or do certain versions of the Xbox use certain manufacturers of
drives? Finally, is replacing it someone a reasonably competent computer
person can do or should I send it to someone?

Thanks in advance.

Replacement drives can be purchased from:

http://www.marketworks.com/awstore/returnwarehouse
http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/

You can put any Xbox DVD drive into your system. They are all compatible.
Anyone can replace their DVD drive. All you have to do is open up the case,
remove a few cables and pull it out. Then slap the new one in, and
re-connect the cables. I can post a tutorial if you need one, but it's
really a simple process once you take a look inside.

Thanks for the help. Do you know if there's a performance difference
between the Thomson and Samsung drives? Samsung seems to be a lot more
expensive.. Thanks again!

The only thing I wanted to add was that you will need a Torx 20 (and
possibly 10) screwdriver (pick up a set at Home Depot for under $10).
There's multiple guides on XBox disassembly, etc. on www.xbox-scene.com

Older Samsung drives (I believe it's just the older ones) can read CD-R's
which is why they are more expensive. Otherwise they are pretty much the
same as far as DVD's go.

The Return Warehouse Xbox link I posted is my store - if you (or anyone
else) end up buying a DVD drive from there (or any other Xbox part) you can
use our new promotion code - xboxpromo for a 5% discount.
