I've been very ignorant over the xbox but now that halo2 is out i'm
interested in getting one. Firstly i want to chip it cos i cant afford £45
for a game when i can get maybe 8 for the same price. Also i've heard people
talkin about installing a hard drive onto one? If this is possible can i
install my games onto the hd and not need the disk no more? Also any one
know a place on the web that sells xbox's pre-modded? I'm in the UK
Thanks All

The following website may have information that can help:
http://www.pikeytwat.co.uk/

Halo 2 will be have a recommended retail of £39.99 but it wouldn't be too
hard to find it for £29.99. Games haven't been £44.99 in quite a while, so
I'm wondering when the hell you actually last brought a game instead of
stealing it.

So, if you want the xbox for Halo2 why do you need to modify it at all?
After all, online playing via live is one of Halo 2's strongpoints.. almost
self-defeating...

So can you not use live when the xbox is chipped?

Correct, you'll have your Xbox's serial banned from the service if you
connect with any low-level modifications.

Not to start controversy here, but this is a Microsoft newsgroup regarding
Microsoft hardware and software.

Microsoft's official answers about modifications to an Xbox would probably
be: (1) Modded Xboxes are prevented from participating on Xbox Live! for
security reasons, preventing rogue code from possibly operating in an
unknown or unpredictable manner which could ruin the gaming experience for
paying users, and (2) check about Page 19 of the Xbox manual, and you'll
see it explicitly mentions decompile or disassemble of onboard firmware or
hardware (i.e., opening an Xbox and changing out a part) whereby changes to
a patent- or copyright-protected parts might be made. The hardware within
an Xbox is not by any means entirely Microsoft, but includes other
manufacturers who hold development and intellectual rights to the parts.

The XBOX cannot be used with a MODCHIP. UNless you have the ability to turn
it off before logging onto XBOX live.

Don't be an idiot. If you can't afford £45 for a new game, pop down to
your local second hand software shop, and buy them there. Even Game now
does reasonable pricing on nearly new games.

That's correct, yes. But you'll need to chip your Xbox to use a larger
HDD. If you want to use xbox live, you'll need to buy a chip that can
be switched off.
