I just picked a new HD TV. I'm looking into getting either the Xbox
advanced HD pack or the Monster component connection to connect to my TV,
and I am looking for thoughts or suggestions. The $20 for the HD pack seems
like a no brainer, will I notice improvement from the standard video
connection. How does the fiber optic cable work in connecting to a
receiver (true 5.1 sound ?). Is the Monster component set worth $60 ? Is
it any better than the HD pack ? Monster cables are generally way over
priced in my opinion...

Thanks for your input...

Most don't find Monster worth the extra money. I have the Microsoft version
and I am totally happy. You can find out much more on HDTV gaming at

Pick up the MS HD Pack, it even includes the component video cables.
For the audio, you'll need to buy a toslink cable (not included in the
pack but ~$15 for 6f at Radio Shack), plug it into your reciever and you
should be set (yes, true 5.1). I've never noticed a difference (other
than the price) between the Monster HD pack and the MS one; and you
should certainly not notice any difference in sound.

Adios,
Nick

also saw one at a Game Stopp yestersday. Finally there's always eBay

When I said I ordered mine from Amazon.com, I meant I just ordered it this
week. In fact it is due for delivery today. I started this thread saying
that I just purchased my HDTV and I was looking for comments on the HD pack.
Based on what people said, I ordered the HD pack instead of the Monster
cable set. If you go to Amazon.com, they have them in stock for $19.99. I
ordered it on Monday afternoon and I will have it this morning...

that has a new one in stock or quit wasting my time.

Although I'm not seeing them listed as in stock online, I found two
stores (the Game Crazy & Game Stop I mentioned earlier in this thread)
that had at least a couple in stock each last week. Either way, I don't
understand your apprehension with eBay. Unless stated specifically in
the auction, you are bidding for actual items that someone is selling.
If you win the auction, you enter a contract and that person is
obligated to sell the item to you (and likewise you must pay for it).
Although I'm sure there are sammers on eBay, the person who I posted 3
links from currently has over 7000 postive reviews from distinct eBay
accounts (that's pretty tough to fake). In fact, as I mentioned
earlier, I bought from this specific seller and got the item within a
few days.

Did you actually LOOK, because I just clicked on each link and that's what I
got! I have mine, luckily, but I've been keeping my eye's open for a while
now since I've heard that people haven't been able to find any, and guess
what? I've been looking and Best Buy, Circuit City, etc in person and not
1 HD Pack in sight. I don't even see a place on the shelf with the other
packs for the HD Pack. Either they are just flying off the selves, or
something is up. It doesn't make since. Xbox games in HDTV is great, but
right now you can find them anywhere. You have to go to great lengths to
find one, and more then likely online someplace like EBay.

Madden 05

I have a quick question for you. I hooked up the HD pack last night. When
I play games in 480i, everything is fine. When I try to go 480p, something
isn't quite right. Menu options appear to have a shadow, almost like their
out of convergence. Do you have thoughts or suggestions ?

Thanks

I looked at those HD Cables on EBay. I don't see a way to get 5.1 Surround
sound with those cables. Only standard Left and Right Audio. Looks like
cheap cables also.

First off, this thread is about buying the HD Pack from eBay, not the
cables. Now it's true that the HD Pack does come with Component video
cables, however the audio cables it comes with are composite (red &
white) cables. Both the Advanced & HD Pack are shipped this way from
Microsoft (Advance Pack has S-Vid plus composte audio, HD has component
vid and composite audio). If you want 5.1 sound, you have to buy a
toslink cable seperately; this is regardless of whether you buy the
Advanced or HD Pack from eBay or Best Buy. The place you insert the
cable is a bit obscured because it's covered on the HD/Advanced Pack by
default (you don't want dust interfering with the signal). The cables
probably are cheap, but again that's the way Microsoft ships them. Think
of it this way: most component video cables cost more than the HD Pack
alone, MS is shipping the pack with cables for 19.99 so of course
they're cheap.

Adios,
Nick
