At the price of having to purchase a highend video card or a console. ;)

Very pretty. But the article makes it sound like they are moving farther
away from what I liked in Daggerfall. I will be keeping an eye articles
though.

Excellent news - and I'm glad that its' already got 2 year's worth of
work into it - means less time until it hits the shelves.
Looks like I'll wait until the specs are announced before upgrading...

Well it would do, it's set in Cyrodiil, which by the old (pre-now) lore is
mostly Jungle, although it looks like they've changed that a little bit.
Morrowind was set on Vvardenfell, which is basically just a volcanic island,
so that's why that was so grey and depressing. 8-)

OMG those screenshots are gorgeous, and quite an upgrade to the Morrowind
look. I'll be keeping an eye on this one and looking to hear more about the
gameplay.

Why?
The skill system is way better than a class based system. Skills allow
one to create a flexible character. Adaptability is the key.
Class based systems lock you into doing things one way.
I suspect that among RPG players it's probably a 75/25 split for
char/skill based preference. Puts me in the minority because I prefer
skill based systems.

It would be so awesome if this game was an Xbox 2 launch title.

The primary complaint that most people have against Daggerfall and
Morrowind's skill systems is that it is just too easy to level up the
character without actually 'playing' the game. Throw fireball after
fireball at the wall in the safety of town, jump up and down when running
around town, or just go to the trainer and buy a few levels.
It's a system that lends itself to abuse. It doesn't "have" to be abused,
but the temptation is there, and strong. It's a perception kind of thing,

Once you got to know the place Morrowind was just too small. 8-)
Daggerfall was 166,420 square kilometres ie about 75% the size of Britain.
Morrowind was just a tiny say 25 square kilometres. 8-)
With the random terrain generator it should be very easy to quickly put
together vast areas which modders are going to love.

But there was NOTHING THERE in Daggerfall except random monsters.
Nothing. Everything of interest was on your map (or eventually would be
on it) and you could just "warp" right to it. There was no reason to
wander the countryside at all so its size was utterly meaningless.

True, but kudos to anyone who went through the whole game without clicking
on their maps. ;-)

Nah... class/skill based, who cares. If the title gets all
the elements right, any system could work. BioWare made BG
work despite the archaic AD&D system. I too prefer skill-based
myself as you have greater freedom with how you develop the
character.
Anyway, I'm suspecting that the original poster might be
thinking along the line of 10 minor/major sp gains equals
a level. When you come to think of, that is rather unusual.
Don't see why that feature should be all that offensive.
Later...

| For that matter, the system in "Planescape: Torment" was using the AD&D
rules and it came together beautifully. Alas, no more "Torment"... It's a
shame that the true risk-takers have to be overshadowed by more pedestrian
fare, isn't it? I loved "Redguard" for the PC, and most of the "Elder
Scrolls" titles have been excellent, but in my mind, they are among the
exceptions to the rule of rather dull AD&D style play that most RPGs tend to
favour. I have been aching for a truly innovative RPG for a good while now.
Any suggestions of a way to break from the norm? I've heard that "Beyond
Good and Evil" is good...
