Hi,

I have been searching a few days for a FULLY programmable controller.
The reason is that I'm in a wheelchair. I have a spinal cord injury
and can't use normal gamepads because I can't use the triggers right.
So I'm wondering if anyone knows a controller in which you can re-map
the triggers to another button. I have seen many
programmable/macro-function controllers. But all of them don't say you
also can re-map the triggers.
These are the ones I have seen:
http://www.the-console-corner.com/t..._controller.htm
http://www.madcatz.com/MadCatz/prod...product_id=4526
http://www.netjak.com/features/micro.htm
http://www.darkplanets.com/product_...type=23&prod=77
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_...414#description
http://europe.thrustmaster.com/prod...hp?p=T74&fam=20

So maybe someone has one these and can help me explain it.
Hope to hear from you.

Greetings Alex.

I'm not sure if a keyboard and a mouse are an acceptable alternative for
you, but at least this device claims to be fully configurable:

And if you aware of any workable controller that uses the PS2 connector
(like a trackball), I imagine that this adapter would allow you to use
it as well.

How about modifying a controller directly? It sounds as if you need the
buttons in another location, not reprogrammable with different games. If
that is the case a permanent modification might be the ticket, and would be
an easy fix. Given the original controllers there is plenty of room for
adding another switch or tow on the body which should be accesible (can't
say for sure not knowing the extent of the problem, but you are apparently
hitting the other buttons okay). The only trick is that you might need a
cheap resistor to make the switches read correctly when not pressed, given
the variable nature of the trigger button. Really simple stuff, and anyone
handy with a soldering gun and drill (for mounting the switch) should be
able to fix one for you. While you are at it, make it a lighted switch,
whch should work fine off of the available voltages in the controller -
might as well make it kinda cool. Radio Shack, digikey or other places
should have simple switches that work. That is, if you want to make the
switches simple on/off, which to be honest is how I use the triggers, even
in a racing game.

I have spoken to one person that had problems working all the switches, and
they actually ran a wire from the controller to another box with a large
button which they worked with another body part. The rest of the controller
worked the same, just the addition of the short wire from the controller to
the big button in the box. This might be considered as well, if applicable.

Good luck, and great to see that you are not letting handicaps stop you from
gaming.

Thanks for your help. I'm not really a technician. I have a contact at
a forum who is also helping me. Maybe to built me a arcade stick with
thumbstick. Or a controller with extra single buttons for the
triggers. Kinda like you said with the wires. I don't know how a
switch will work. Because I can't make a picture of it. You're correct
that I can press other buttons good. It's only the placement of the
triggers that bother me. But when you place the triggers different it
might be difficult to use the right thumbstick and press the trigger
at the same time.

I know I can't play Xbox games like normal people because of my
handicap but I'm trying everything to make it as much fun to play. And
I enjoy playing the games although sometimes it's very frustrating
that I can't play the games how I want it.

8 years ago (before my accident) I had a playstation and playing was
that simple. No analog sticks, just simple buttons. Why has everything
now to be so complex :-) I know that these days more functions and
advanced tricks can be done. But as far as I can remember those things
were also possible then. Only walking and viewing with the camera
couldn't be done because now you have 2 thumbsticks.

I just hope to find a good suitable controller/arcade stick to play
all games with great pleasure.
Mike

Hey, dont worry about it, i dont know, nor can i picture how to do something
like that either (; obviously though, somebody out there does. ask around
your community. im sure that theres plenty of people willing to help you.
you also might want to consider a multi-button joystick. the make them
pre-designed for xbox or, since the connection is actually just standard
USB, you could have another one of those techies build an adaptor pretty
easily for you.

dont give up... there is a solution
