story by Frankie (posted by Sketch because Frankie is away on a diplomatic
mission)

They said it couldn't be done! Actually, they didn't say that, but if they
had, we'd have proved them all (the fake people who didn't say anything)
wrong! Halo 2 has gone gold. We finished every line of code, every pixel of
art, every frame of animation, every phoneme of dialog and every note of
music. We finished it when we said we would (when it was done) and shipped
that baby right on time to make its November launch date. And we're kinda
proud of it. We think it's "fun."

"Gone Gold" is a somewhat archaic expression, since the "gold discs" are
actually digital tapes and eventually silver discs. But it certainly feels
golden. This basically means that the game has been shipped to retail
manufacture. Somewhere in the world, a gigantic DVD pressing factory has
started making Xbox game discs with the utterly complete version of Halo 2.
Maybe there IS a gold disc somewhere. Perhaps it's time for an epic quest!

We now have retail versions (test samples) here in the office. In fact, one
sharp, and presumably jealous-eyed reader saw the following legend appear in
his Live-linked MSN Instant Messenger window: "Anm8erJB is now playing HALO
2 on Xbox Live." Now THAT'S a tease.

It's been a long, hard road though. When you're playing it, and we hope you
enjoy it, think of the 116 hour work weeks, the long nights, the bad food,
the really long corridor to the bathroom (people use scooters to get there)
and the utter lack of places to curl up and sleep.

This is a copy of the email sent out to the team to announce the final RTM.

It's official! Halo 2 (all versions) has released to manufacturing! Hooray!

And so, to lead us into the longest 30 days of waiting in the history of
shooters set in the year 2552, are a series of quotes from a sampling of the
Bungie team on the process, the three years of brutal terror and horror that
brought us to this point.

Tyson Green, Head Troublemaker: "Hey, there's room on that tattoo to make it
Nov. 29, right? No?"

Chris Carney, Chief Hole-Hider: "I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride."

David Candland, User Interface Surgeon: "Lather, rinse, repeat."

Mat Noguchi, Evil Robot: "I hope your Xbox catches on fire."

Nathan Walpole, Svelte Lead Animator: "I hate the Scarab."

Chris Butcher, speaking to Cuban: "Just because you're playing on Legendary
doesn't make you a legend."

Harold Ryan, Test Manager: "Sleep is for the dead"

Dave Dunn, Environmental Activist: "Gold?! More like fools gold!"

Luke Timmins; Supra-Timmmay: "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit
sniffing glue."

Marty O'Donnell, Music Maestro: "Not with a bang, but a simper."

Jaime Griesemer, Head Assassin: "Trying to catch jellybeans fired from a
shotgun with your face."

Curtis Creamer: Master of Seduction, "PorkChop Sandwiches!"

Paul Russel: "Soul-crushing disillusionment."

Domenic Koeplin, Head Wootist: "Some things are better left unsaid".

Brian Jarrard, Community Killa: "Is it OK to play with ourselves?"

Harold Ryan, Test Bastard, Quote 2: "The bullet is in the air, but we still
gotta move the princess out of the way so she doesn't get killed."

Joseph Staten, Auteur-Kommissar: "Not with a bang, but a whimper. No, wait.
Better make that the other way around."

Alta Hartmann, Bungie Princess: "Life is a like a box of cherries, sometimes
you get the really yummy ones with the gooey caramel and other times you get
the gross raspberry creme sh*t ones that taste like ****."

Check back on Bungie.net later today for the first ever VIDEO edition of the
Weekly Update. Get a glimpse at life inside the Bungie Towers as Frankie and
I give you a tour of the Studio and bump into a few familiar faces along the
way.

And, since we've still got a loooong 29 days to go before the game actually
arrives on retail shelves, why not spend the days getting yourself prepared
for Halo2uesday (hey I didn't make it up, but it does have a nice ring to
it) by reading these past stories on Bungie.net:

Weekly Update Q&A: Answers to many questions about Halo 2
The Rumor Buster: Squash those nasty Halo 2 rumors once and for all.
Are You Prepared for Halo 2?: Make sure you're ready to rock on November
9th.
There's also a cornacopia of screenshots, wallpaper, concept art and more to
be found on our Halo 2 Page.

And lastly, if you're into gaming magazines, be sure to check out the newest
issues of XBN and EGM, both of which feature the first ever glimpse of Halo
2's single player campaign as well as new multiplayer info. You might also
start to see a certain Spartan making appearances on the television in the
near future as well. So, the game might be done, but there's still a lot
going on between now and the 9th. Stay tuned, we're almost there!

WEEKLY UPDATE!

The latest Weekly Update is better than ever. Mere text alone can't do
justice to this momentous occasion so to spice things up, we've got the
first ever VIDEO edition of the update. Get a glimpse inside the Bungie
Towers as Frankie and I give you a tour of the Studio and bump into a few
familiar faces along the way.

Currently, only a Windows Media version is available for viewing but our
friends at HBO and Mythica.org are working on setting up Quicktime versions
as well as a BitTorrent seed for easier downloads (this is a peer-to-peer
service). We'll post more info on those outlets once they are available. For
now, help yourself to what we've got: (You can 'right click - save as' or
try to stream it directly)

I think it might become the best-selling Xbox title ever, if not the
best-selling console game ever.

For sure on the Xbox, but man people eat up that GTA stuff. It kept me
interested for a couple of hours, but then got old. Compare that with
thousands of hours of multiplayer madness on Halo/Halo 2. There are just
too many PS2's out there. There are probably more people that own a PS2
strictly as a DVD player (own no games) than own an Xbox period.

I think it will be the best-selling Xbox title, but it would have to sell
more copies than there are Xbox consoles in order to outsell previous
console games.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that some stuff in this generation still hasn't
outsold some stuff from last generation. For example, GoldenEye 007 on N64
sold 7.5 million copies. Zelda: Ocarina of Time was 7.1 million. If you go
back even further (to the NES days), I think that there were more than 11
million copies of Super Mario Bros. 3 sold. If pack-in games count, I
remember reading that there were 63 million Super Mario Bros. carts sold, or
some other really high number (it was a pack-in for a really long time,
IIRC).

Now that there are three different consoles managing to hold their own on
the market, I don't think we'll see those types of numbers again. As asd
noted, GTA might match some stuff from last generation; I don't have any
sales numbers, though.
