If you use a pre-paid card for your xbox live, Automatic Renewal is
not set and your account automatically reverts to Silver membership
when your Gold expires. However, if you paid by Credit Card then auto
renewal is set to renew at the full price on the date of expiry. If
you call in advance of the expiry date to cancel your subscription, it
takes effect immediately. This means that to get the best out of your
subscription, you have to remember to call XBox support (UK: 0800 587
1102) the day before expiry and hope you get through to someone. If
you call say a month beforehand, they tell you to call nearer the time
(meaning you could easily forget and more money for them!!) and dont
mention that you can simply remove automatic renewal.

Today I called up to check the status of my two accounts. One was paid
by Credit Card and the other was a pre-paid card. The support person
confirmed the pre-paid one will not be automatically renewed but the
CC one will. I asked if the CC one could be changed so that it was not
automatically renewed and she initially told me to call back nearer
the time to cancel it. After explaining to her that this was pointless
(for me, anyway) she went away and came back and said I will do that
for you now!. I have checked my account status on the Xbox Live
Dashboard and it now says expiry is 04/2007 and Renewal: Not Set.
Perfect!!!

By the way, the dashboard only tells you the month the account is due
to expire, not the actual date. Dont assume it is the end of the month
as it is not!! To find out, you have to go to xbox.com/en-GB/ and go
to My Xbox, then to Manage Profile, then Billing and Contact Info
Management and then click on your Service Name at the bottom of the
page.

Hope this is useful.
