Author Change Gamertag issue

Hi all,

Having a problem here, and I'm getting nowhere with Xbox support.

I used to have a live account with my old Xbox, which I let lapse about 18
months ago. When I treated myself to a 360 last week, I was able to go in
and recover my old account. I updated my details and everything seems ok. I
assume I'm on the one month free gold trial, as it hasn't been charged to my
credit card yet.

So at this point I have a 360 and a recovered live account. All well and
good, but the problem I have is that I wanted to change my gamertag. When I
got my original Xbox I wanted to use the tag "Finex", but it was already in
use, so I ended up with "DanFinex", which is a bit crap:-)

This was about 3 years ago though, and so I wanted to check whether it was
now available. I looked on the Xbox live site and did a search for "Finex",
and I'm told that "The gamertag you entered does not exist on Xbox Live". So
having updated my credit card I purchased some points so I could pay the 800
points to change my gamertag.

I went through the Edit Profile section on the dashboard and selected
"Change Gamertag", and then entered the new tag "Finex". At this point the
tag was checked and I got a message saying that the tag is already in use!

I have called Xbox support and asked them to check. The first time I called
I could barely understand the woman I spoke to, but she told me that the new
tag was not in use, and to change it I just needed to go to the Edit profile
section. I told her I had already done this and all she could tell me is
that is what I needed to do.

The second time I called, the woman I spoke to explained the same procedure
to me. I told her I had done this already, at which point she gave me a
reference number and said that I would be called back within 48 hours. That
was 5 days ago, and I still haven't heard.

I've just spent another hour on hold trying to get through to someone,
before giving up. Basically I just want to get it sorted, but nobody seems
able to give me a definitive answer. I can only assume that there is some
sort of block on the expired account "Finex", from whenever it was in use.
The people at Xbox support tell me it's available, the Xbox community site
says it's available, but my Dashboard won't let me do it.

Anyone got any ideas please? Or perhaps a way of getting support to call me
back when they say they will?

Thanks.

Hi Dan,

I'd try calling Xbox Support a third time. Tell them you have not received
a call back, providing the reference number. I'd ask to talk to another
representative if the first person can't help you. If all else fails and
you are not able to use the gamertag Finex, is there an alternative
gamertag name you'd happy with?

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for that. I tried a third time, and a fourth time in fact, still with
no help. In the end, having spent over 4 hours in total on the phone, I just
caved in and went for another gamertag, and it worked ok. Good job it was a
free phone number!
