| I have both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, however I am unable to determine which
one has better graphics. I notice that the 360 offers all games in 1080i and
1080p but the PS3 has some titles (Resistance for example) that operate at
720p or lower in some cases. Am I to assume that if Resistance came out for
360 it would be graphically more impressive than the PS3's offering. Anyone
have an opinion??
| |
| JBDragon 2007-01-30, 8:03 pm |
| If that game came out for the 360, it would work on ALL HDTV in HD!
The PS3 has a Design FLAW. It can't Scale UP at all. That means the Game
has to support 720P, 1080i, or 1080P to work at that Resolution or your own
HDTV has the scale it up on it's own.
The problem is older CRT Based HDTV's, like my 4 year old Mitsubishi, will
have nothing at all to do with 720P. It doesn't scale on it's own, it
relies on the HD device you plug into it, to handle that job. So a game
like Resistance that ONLY supports 720P, when you try to run it on your PS3
that's set to 1080i because that's the only HD mode it supports, the game
will tell you that you need to set the PS3 to 720P to get the best Graphics
Results and then drop you down to 480P. Well since you can't change the
PS3 to 720P because then your HDTV would show no picture at all, you have a
problem!
I think Sony was counting on ALL games to come out in 1080P, in which case
this wouldn't be a problem, but I think the PS3 just doesn't have the Power
Sony thinks it does. If they make the games in 1080P because of limited
Graphics Memory, then Graphic quality and frame rate would go down. The
problem is, unlike the 360, it can't scale up a 720P game to 1080i or 1080P,
it expects your HDTV to handle that. Well that screws me over and millions
of others that have a HDTV like mine because 4 years ago, HDTV's were
really, really expensive, and these lower cost HDTV's were more Reasonable
in price so a lot were sold.
Every other HD device works how it's suppose to, it's ONLY the PS3 that has
this problem. I also don't expect Sony being able to fix this either.
They wouldn't say they were working on the problem, and then a few days
later retract that statement. This is only one of quite a few problems the
PS3 has, but this is one of the biggest.
I don't know about you, but I want to play games in HD, and when the game is
dropped down to 480P, it's no longer HD but ED. Not to mention the fact the
PS3 doesn't even come with any HD cables with it. Pretty sad of Sony, spend
that much, and no HD cables and problems on millions of older HDTV's out
there, including some of Sony's own HDTV's! For ALL Sony promised, what a
big let down.

Name one 360 game that can be played in 1080p. I have never seen a 360 game
where it specs say it can be played at this res. Now to say "all games" is
way overboard.

| ALL 360 games can be scaled up to 1080P! Of course you need a VGA
connection as the 360 doesn't support HDMI.

| Yes, but does the game(s) themsevles state 1080p on it res capabilities.
There isn't one game that says this on the case. GOW says 480p/720p/1080i.
The OP didn't say anything about upscaling. Even then, you think you would
really notice a difference between 1080i and p if done?

I beg to differ. We've got an Xbox 360 hooked up to a 42" Philips LCD
flat-screen, and have been delighted with the 360 stuff that runs on it.
Prenote on our HD:
Doing cartoons about DVDs means you come in contact with lots of information
about not just production but issues like the ongoing HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray I've
avoided HD until this past summer when we moved all the television down to
the basement and reclaimed three feet of a room by putting a flat-screen
above the fireplace. Mind you this is the UK, which is following a bit
behind the US in many ways, and as such there are still less than five HD
broadcasts in the entire country (thanks to Sky's shared monopoly with the
BBC) - and you know that two of the "HD" channels are not really HD except
in terms of the 1080i support (the content is of course not HD at the
source, just the signal). Lots of blokes here went silly last summer and
went out to buy "HD Ready" TVs in obeyance to the hype surrounding the World
Cup - the week before England's toss-in you would lose count of the number
of guys lugging the things down the sidewalk - but they don't realize that
they'll have to buy another real HD screen in just a few years.
I mistakenly bought a 360 version of Lego Star Wars II, embarrassing myself
in the process (but then when was the last time one had to remember which
platform you were buying a program to run on? For me it was 1982..). I
fired Lego Star Wars II for the 360 up and was given the
'incompatible'/check for upgrades screen. I then did the upgrade via the
Xbox 360's port, restarted and ran the LSW game - only to find that it was
situated in 4:3 on the left side of the wide screen. There wasn't any
correction that followed despite re-setting-up the video options in both
game and Xbox 360, 720 or 1080i. The only alternative was to take the
non-360 program back and exchange for the 360 version.
So I would guess that, unless an upgrade for a game really makes it support
something the non-360 Xbox didn't before, it's not really effective. The
Lego Star Wars II game was after all just released in September, and one
would think that its non-360 revision would have anticipated the HD mode of
the 360, but then we're looking at fairly new integration of PC-style
technology, and of course other games might fare better in this regard.
I was waffling about Xbox360 vs PS3 and had originally decided to size up
both of them when both were out in the market being played on; also I had
planned to purchase a pair of USB controllers for the PC that were like
Xbox360 and the PS3, to make sure I liked the interface before sinking a ton
of cash for a games console. My wife pre-empted me and got us the Xbox 360
and so there we are. I'm quite happy with it other than the fan noise.

| I'm not sure what your talking about?!?!?! How about who cares about Lego
Star Wars? ALL 360 games are suppose to be in 16x9 and at least 720P. I'm
not quite understanding what your getting at, that a XBox Game didn't
support HD correctly on your 360? Which would be because only some Xbox
games supported HD and only some supported 16x9. Doesn't matter if your
trying to play it on your 360, it's not a 360 game, it's a Xbox game.
I have a 4 year old HD Ready 1080i 42" TV. Works great. That's all most
people really need anyway, at least here in the US. Most people get their
TV though Cable or Satellite. There's your TUNER. A HDTV just means
there's a Digital OTA Tuner built in. I have a Media center PC, I have my
Antenna plugged into that and get like 4 HD channels I can watch that way.
I can watch all those on my HD Ready TV by the 360's Media Center, and
stream it all from the PC. Most all my TV Watching is though my Digital HD
Dual Tuner DVR. Which I get quite a few HD channels some are in 720P but
most are in 1080i, all being displayed in 1080i on my HD Ready TV, plus my
360 for HD Gaming, and watching HD-DVD's and downloaded HD movies.
If I had a PS3, the only game worth playing(and that's not saying much) is
Resistance, and I'd be screwed having to play that game at 480P because my
HD Ready CRT Rear Projection 1080i TV doesn't support 720P at all. Never
been a problem for me, and as long as I don't buy a PS3, it won't as long as
I have my TV. Which I don't plan to replace for a couple more years yet.
It sucks about the worthless HD in the UK. Hopefully MS will be able to get
Movies and maybe TV shows, and in HD over there in your country, so you can
see what real HD is like. That would be some competition, and maybe kick
things into gear over there, of they can try to block it, slow it down so
they don't have to change their ways.
As for the Noise. Most of the Noise is from the 12X DVD drive. When it
spins up it is pretty loud. I really don't notice it anymore. I could be
used to these noises though. I've been a long time TIVO user, I have a
pretty old Dual Drive TIVO Box with a lifetime subscription that I can still
transfer over to another Box if I want. Few TIVO users can still do that.
the HDD aren't the quietest things in the world anymore but it still works
great. What's a little noise. I normally have the Volume up anyway.

only just recently started to get used to pressing the power button to turn

Go back and read what I wrote. It's more than sufficient I think to figure
it out.
Gist: While even major games that were released in September on the Xbox
might claim to be a proper upgrade enabling it to run on the 360, this is
not necessarily the case.

I'll put up with the lackluster HD in the UK because I know I'll have the
real thing when I move back to the US. Doesn't mean I have to be quiet
about it though.
I've been covering the DVD biz since 2001 and don't restrict myself to the
limited information they rely upon here. I'm American and know there's a
world outside the UK. My favorite trade show is VideoForum, where people
can see REAL HD for themselves, for free, whether they work for BBC or not.
So I'm quite aware of how much better things are in the US - and someday
I'll actually be able to return!

A little noise can completely distract if one is sensitive to such things.
When you compose and record as I do you learn to pay attention for any
glitch in the sound. The DVD drive in the UK Xbox 360 (qualifying what I
say for clarity) is as loud as the CD-ROM drives were when they first came
out - and it really shouldn't be that loud given the technology available to
one and all.

| Again, I don't know what your talking about. 3 button?? Why, that's a 3
button. Yes, I'm in the US, and a Power button is a Power button, Always
has been. Never heard of such a thing as turn on a TV pressing 3. Again
why? How about if your changing your channel to 3, does the TV turn off
on you? I don't get it. Was there Never a Power button until Recently?
Then again, where most ALL places here in the US a light switch is Up to
turn on and down to turn off, and yet at my grandmothers house all the
switches are turned upside down, so now off is up, and on is down. Kind of
confusing. To this day, I still don't know the reason for this.

I've never understood why this is the case either. Though if my new Philips
is any measure, the turning-on of one's telly in the UK via pressing '3'
(honest, no other button on the remote would function with a TV off) is
diminishing. Perhaps some common sense is seeping in through the
protectionistic technology they use here.

After you get the TV on with the '3' button (again, this should be evident
to be 'on the remote' because most flat-screen sets don't have a full
numeric button set on them) pressing the 'power' button is thankfully
accepted as standard 'turning off behaviour'.

One has to rotate ones' axis a little to deal with wall switches over here.
They're all like rocker switches, the kind you see on switches mounted on
the cable to a light, for example. When the bottom section of the rocker is
out from the switch, it's supposed to be 'off', and thus the top section of
the rocker, when out from the switch, is supposed to be 'on'. I got an
irritated response to my query about this once, though I suspect the guy
felt logically cornered when he said "Isn't it enough that the light's ON?"
No, alas. Things in the UK are often the way they are because, well,
they've been that way. Silly isn't it?

I'd just like to get back to the good old USA, thanks. I think most
Americans would greatly benefit from seeing what life outside the US is
like - and I don't mean like on a two-week vacation trip, either... at least
a month or two would do to show them how good they've got it, materially and
politically.

You may not be kidding, but you *are* full of it.

Well coming from a Septic that just about blows the irony meter off the
scale really... How many of your fellow countrymen could even find Europe on
a map, or even own a passport? It's a dead certainty that the average UK
citizen knows a hell of a lot more about the rest of the world than the
average American.
Do you *seriously* think that everyone needs to press the "3" button to turn
on a screen? Perhaps you saw someone do it once and thought everyone did.
Never occurred to you that someone might have wanted to watch Channel 3, and
that pressing the channel selector would take the TV out of standby?

You must have a need for conflict. Do you talk like this to people in
person?
I somehow don't have a need to meet your limited perspective. Ta ta!
