Chris -
I hate to disagree with anyone, but I spent a very frustrating morning
on line with the techs at xbox. I have an internal wireless network,
functioning through a Telus connection and a 2-Wire 2700 wireless
gateway / router / ADSL modem. Not all devices that are not on the list
will not work - it just takes a little figuring.
Also - I could not find the compatibility list - all the links, even in
the xbox website, that were supposed to point to it did not seem to
work.
I could not connect this morning, after previously having no trouble
connecting. I kept getting the MTU failure message. My MTU is set to
1500 internally, and Telus states that it is 1500 externally to my
gateway. I explained this to the tech at xbox and was told, and I
quote: "Your MTU must be between 1364 and 1365, 1500 is too high and may
be interfered with by cordless phones". After asking to talk to a tech
that was higher up the scale of learning (and maybe having better
scripts...), I finally gave up.
After a bit of wracking my brains, I figured out that I had made some
firewall settings changes in my 2-wire gateway. I had put it to full
stealth mode with ping disabled. After resetting the firewall settings
to factory default, my system proceeded to work fine.
I figure that I will have a conversation with 2-wire tech support to
find out what additional ports must be open, and will debug it from
there.
As to the people with MTU problems - try working by connecting to the
modem directly with the xbox (even if you have to go buy a 50' cable -
they aren't that expensive), and work out from there. If it works
connected directly, the problem is the wireless settings. If it doesn't
- the problem is in your gateway or your provider.
One note - in another thread, people were saying that their providers do
require mac addresses registered and others saying they don't. The
answer is - ask your provider. Telus, for example, does require the mac
address of any device that connects directly from their wireless modem
to be registered with them.
Good Luck!
Fred.
