Doesn't it seem strange that titles are being cancelled and the system
isn't even out yet?

I mean, granted, most of these are multiplatform affairs and it's
possible that everyone who wants one will already have it by the time
the PS3 launches, but I can't recall ever hearing about titles being
cancelled before the hardware even launches!

Kind of a canary in the coal mine situation?

I would assume -- though I can't actually think of any examples
right now -- that it must have happened on previous consoles too, except
maybe without the public announcements.

Unfortunately, this is common with sliding projects of all kinds. It's not
just the cost of the PS3 and its potential audience - games companies plan
their projects for X number of games across Y platforms for a target date of
Z. With the PS3 sliding, greater uncertaintly means greater risk.

In many cases, putting off games for the PS3 will only be a temporary thing
and the game will come back in a later incarnation, possibly superior when
and if released on the PS3.

The question is whether Sony can convince developers to stay on board in the
mid and long term.

O-O-O-L-L-L-D-D-D!!! That link is so old now, the mold on it is moldy.
The title of the page should be "Canceled Game Titles" since it doesn't
have much to do with just the PS3. The other difference is that several
of those titles are still on the PS2, even quite a few that have been
canceled for the xflop 3-shitty, and those will be playable on the PS3.
So what, is this supposed to be news?

Killing day - was just plain canceled, all platforms. Game titles are
being canceled all the time, this is not news.

Theseis - was never being developed for the PS3. It also remains to be
seen how good this game is, so far there is only concept art, a long
way from gameplay.

Elveon - summer of 2007, at the earliest. Who knows what happens by
then? No actual announcement of PS3 cancellation, small Slovakian
publisher -- these often don't get released at all.

Endless Saga - Webzen "We still have a plan to enter into PS3 market
and I'll let you know when we're prepared to bring something more
valuable and fun to PS3 gamers."

Condemned - has been out on the PC for several months. It was just
another unconfirmed rumor that it might be a PS3 game. More gossip.

Smackdown 07 - still on the PS2. Smackdown was just postponed until
next year for the PS3, not canceled. The developers said they want a
true next-gen version for the PS3.

Oblivion - another unconfirmed rumor for the PS3, been out on the PC
for months. There were never any official plans to have a PS3 version.
Plus, Oblivion is a real snooze fest, there are better RPG coming for
the PS3.

Splinter Cell Double Agent - on the PS2. It never was stated as being a
PS3 title, launch or otherwise. So what?

Interesting link. The biggest PS3 losses are: Smackdown vs Raw. PS2
version is going to look crappy compared to 360. The game is also
heavily advertised during WWE TV programs, which have a huge following.
Elveon is looking great. 360/PC games will only get more popular with
M$ heavily promoting it and XNA. This should be a big advante 360 has
over PS3.

It's sticker shock. Developers dont want to put millions into development
when they are unsure of how many units are going to sell. Also, they want
quality product so when a port would look like crap, then they kill the
project.

SONY is in trouble because of thier pricing.

Sony is losing key executives because of the pricing and install base.
